Does my service allow for data?

Yes, all Ting devices have at least some data capability.

Can I disable data?

Yes, you can. This can be done from the Device Settings page in your Ting account online. Just uncheck the box next to "Can access the internet" under Megabytes.

Do I need to have data enabled to use picture messaging?

You should be able to use picture messaging if you're connected to Wi-Fi, but if there is no Wi-Fi network available, then data will need to be enabled on both your account and your device.

Does my service support 4G and LTE data services?

4G and LTE data is available in certain areas. You can check our coverage map to see if you're in an area covered by 4G or LTE service. Remember, you'll need a device that supports those data speeds as well.

What happens if I'm outside of Ting's coverage area?

If you're outside of our network area, your phone will report "Network Unavailable" as Ting does not offer data roaming. Sometimes, cellular towers may experience problems, so if you're in an area where coverage should be available, but your device is reporting otherwise, you should contact us so we can investigate.

I noticed I have data usage showing up for tomorrow. How is this possible?

All timestamps for usage are calculated using CST. If you're not in this timezone and use data, some of this usage could appear to be reported earlier, or later than you expected.

Is it possible to disable data service on only one phone (out of two in an account)?  I would like to put a smart phone and a "feature" phone (the upcoming Samsung M370) on an account but would like to disable data service on the M370 so that the user cannot accidentally use internet.  Thank you.

Jin, yes you can. In your account you'll see a list of your phones and you can enable/disable features separately for each phone.

If I disable the data on a smart phone will I still be able to recieve pictures? I got the phone for my son but I would like to disable data to keep the bill in line, but the main reason I switched is because my last plan did not support MMS (sending pictures) now I understand that a smart phone is not using MMS  like the feature phones do. Help I need to keep my bill in check.

You mention you run off the sprint network.  Looking at the data coverage maps compared to spint an ting they are differant.  Does Ting use Off Network roaming like sprint?  The reason I ask I had a spint phone working just fine and the ting data was not.  I spoke with someone at ting prior to the purchasing the phone and they said if you sprint phone works there the ting should????  Thoughts?

Hi Sarah,

Ting should work anywhere on the actual Sprint®* network, but we're using a different set of roaming partners than Sprint®* does so you may not get service everywhere a Sprint®* phone does. Keep in mind that we also don't support data roaming, only voice and regular SMS text messages while on one of our roaming partners.

The best way to check if you're on one of our roaming partners is to go to http://ting.com/coverage for our coverage map. If voice is available but data isn't in a a particular area then you'll be using one of our roaming partners in that area.

It's not prorated, but there is a 5% buffer zone between tiers, so you wouldn't get bumped into the next bracket if you accidentally go over the 1999 MB amount by 1 or 2 megabytes.

That said, 2001 MB actually falls into the $42 plan. You'd have to use more than 3000 MB to get into the $60 plan. :)

A little bummed here. After activating my phone, I was immediately prompted to perform an update (don't know if it was OS, firmware, or carrier). The update was about 95MB putting me dangerously close to my self-imposed S-plan limit of 100MB. While this is an obvious notion, I just wanted to let everyone know to connect to wifi before downloading updates. I am now over the S-plan limit two days into the billing cycle. Otherwise I am completely happy with the service so far...thanks Ting.

You are probably right. In my past experience, OTA updates don't count against data caps/usage. Just figured I'd let everyone know that they do count on Ting.

OTA updates do count to data use, however, we provide a small amount of data that will exempt from billing that should be more than enough to cover OTA updates.

Regarding your billing being effected by a possible firmware update at activation, please let us know at the end of the month if the 97 MB has effected your billing, and if so, we'll get that resolved for you for sure.

Got question about Data on a Samsung Transform Ultra (refurb):

Data is unchecked on the Ting Dashboard and the "Wireless & Network Settings/Mobile Networks/3G Data" is unchecked on the phone.  Based on the settings the phone should be incapable of using data supplied by Ting.  This has been the settings for data since activation was completed nearly two weeks ago.  Wifi has been my only choice for data. I used no data in the billing cycle other than the data used to activate the phone.

Today, I wanted to see what would happen when I turned Wifi off. The phone's data setting and the Ting Dashboard remained the same. The "3G" indicator is came on (when the Wifi was on this indicator had been off - regardless of a Wifi signal being available).  Internet via the built in browser, GMail and Google Voice all still worked.  The Data meter on the Ting Dashboard registered usage (first day of new cycle).

I am not that familiar with Android (1st experience) and there are a lot of settings in some programs (especially Google's programs) that I thought may be able to override the phone's do-not-use-data setting. However, having data turned off via the Ting Dashboard (and no Wifi connection) should make this phone incapable of data communication. Yet the phone is using data.

Any thoughts?

Make sure Data is unchecked for the phone in the Devices section of the dashboard, not Settings.

Hi MIke,

The data connection isn't currently blocked on your phone on the network, so try logging into the Dashboard and flipping the block on from there, as Trevor said.

Regarding the phone itself, you are right that there are ways of getting passed the data block that's set on the phone itself, such as Wi-Fi.

What you're describing shouldn't be possible, however, I have noticed that the radios get a bit mixed up on my own Android sometimes and so I'll toggle on and off airplane mode which should reset everything.

If you keep having trouble with all of this, you may want to send us a support request so we can look into it for you - though of course, once you get data blocked on the network itself, that should be the end of it.

OK - Ting really needs to clarify what those sections of the "Your Account" mean:

You log into your account and get these choices: Dashboard, Devices, Plans, Billing, Alerts, Referrals, Activity, Settings. Click on Settings and you get a list of choices that seem to indicate what your phone is allowed to do on Ting's network.  There is a white box off to the right that says: "Settings, Device Settings, Contact Info, Billing Info, Change Password, Cancel This Account" with a green arrow superimposed on "Device Settings" that points to the choices.  One of which is "Can access the internet" under Megabytes.  This exactly the same as under Devices but it apparently does nothing.

These choices are certainly not (as my old calculus prof used to say) intuitively obvious .

I did the toggle Aiplane Mode on & off to "reset everything" and (data still on via the Dashboard's Devices checkbox but off via the phone's settings) and I tried the browser.  Data still comes through even though the phone is set to not use 3G.  Apparently the  "Wireless & Network Settings/Mobile Networks/3G Data" checkbox in the phone's settings does nothing.  While this is not an end-of -the-world situation, I will be more mindful of the 3G indicator - when it is on, the phone will use data. 

I will also have to pay more attention to what happens with the 3G indicator when Wifi is not available.

The Device Settings under Settings actually applies to default settings for future devices you purchase on Ting. To adjust the individual settings for phones already on Ting, you'd need to go to Devices then select the device you want to adjust the settings for.

Hey guys.
My plan had no data in it. And when I checked my dashboard, it showed me that I had used 1MB of Data. I just wanted to know how I can only use my cell phone for text or call packages but not the data part of the package. Thankyou.

Under normal circumstances your phone can connect using data for things like updating profiles and PRLs etc. You are allowed 1 mb of data to allow for these normal processes and will not be billed.

I think I've got the opposite problem. Just as an experiment, I disabled Data early in this month's billing cycle and everything ground to a halt. So far, so good. Today I decided to finally download my first app from Google's Play Store, and I get a response panel "No Connection" and "Retry." I reset everything a half hour ago, logged out, signed back in and all the settings are correct, as expected, but I'm not getting any action.

How long do I have to wait?

Oh, yeah - I have 5 bars on my signal strength icon, in case you were wondering. The most useful thing I learned from my experiment was that my Yahoo Mail app was eating me alive. I disemboweled that sucker and things quieted down, data use-wise, after that.

Woops! Turns out I had not only set up the Ting page to disable Data, but I had also disabled Data on the phone itself, using the Android menu for data services. Everything's working fine now.

Many or most apps that can use data have a setting for data useage. You can usually disable automatic sync in the case of email accounts or choose what data type to use. Unless you need to use 3G/4G data try setting those services/apps/games to use WIFI instead. Email syncing every 5 minutes will chew through lots of data and battery. Set those to manual or some extended time limit and or if you have multiple accounts set your main account to sync and the rest to manual.

This is probably a really dumb question, but this is my first smartphone.  Please excuse the noobiness.

When I'm at home, and I connect my Optimus G to my home wireless, does that still count toward my data usage?  If not, how can I make sure that I'm only using my home wireless and not my 3G that does count toward my data quota?  It is really as simple as toggling wifi on and off?

Wifi data does not count toward your Ting bill - only the 3G/4G data on the phone.

If keeping your data use down is your main goal, toggling your 3G/4G data on and off is a better control than turning Wifi on/off.

Turning the Wifi off should only be done if you have a battery drain issue you are dealing with.

I use a Widget called Data Enabler to turn the 3G data off on my Samsung Transform Ultra and it generally keeps the 3G data completely off.  I leave my Wifi enabled 100% of the time.

Some apps allow you to set syncing or updating as WIFI only. Look for things like phone system updates or Google Play app updates. Those types of settings should reduce 3G data usage while you aren't on WIFI. Depending on the phone you can usually disable 3G data. WIFI does not count towards your data usage. Certain apps may automatically update using 3G unless you specify WIFI so scour you settings.

Making sure you have applications set to WIFI only makes sure that you don't have unintended data usage if you forget to turn it off with a widget.

What my phone says and what the provider says may not align. I'd just like to know how accurate Ting's measurements are, given all the grief people seem to get with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. I use LBE Privacy Guard's meter now, though with Virgin Mobile it's not a big deal. I know that Sprint service is good at my house. I'd be looking to get more voice coverage for travel situations and lower costs for the meager amount of data I use.

It's sad that Sprint isn't playing nicely about transferring VM phones, as these phones were paid off long ago.

I don't know how inaccurate you think Sprint's meter is but Ting does provide for some grace at the bucket boundaries. If it isn't a big deal with VM why is it an issue here?

As for Virgin Mobile devices not being available for BYOD it may be unfortunate but there are services that are disabled or unavailable with those devices. Transferring a device with disabled services means you will be unhappy when you can't do voice and text roaming or tethering or hotspot. Sell your device and get a refub Ting device.

We use the information that Sprint®* sends us, so we have to trust that it's accurate ourselves. So far we haven't had any inaccuracies reported, but if you ever have reason to believe it's not accurate then definitely do let us know.

The referenced Consumerist article specifically addressed wireline ISPs and not wireless carriers. Furthermore, the audit revealed not all of the metering systems were in use and, more frequently, any errors in reporting were on the low side.

It seems Ting's 5% tier buffer is more than generous and compensates for erroneous use or metering errors.

My GSIII running Android 4.1.1 has a built in data usage meter that has reported accurate data usage when compared to Ting's data meter. Furthermore, it supports setting data limits and alarms as does Ting's account tools.

Ultimately, there is no substitute for due diligence and if overages are a concern, there are plenty of tools available to ensure that never happens.

I know you have the 5% buffer between tiers - how does that work for the small tier?  I unknowingly used 5 mb of data when I set up my phone - so will I be charged for the small data tier, or is that covered in the buffer?  If I'm going to be charged for the small tier, I figure I might as well use the other 95 mb, but if not I'll keep sticking to wi-fi only.  Two weeks in and we're loving our new phones and looking forward to our smaller monthly bill.  Thanks!

@ Nora, I think they give you some extra "free" data your first month to allow for some initial setup?? Along with a small allowance each month for data updates that happen in the background. When in doubt give them a call. They have always been helpful when I’ve had questions. If you do call, don’t be surprised that a real person answers your call and not a machine!

We don't charge for the first 20 MB on the first month because activating does use a bit of data. So as long as you don't use anymore you should be fine Nora.

Ting has retired the "plan" system. You will now pay for the devices and usage after it is used.

Hi Tina, since you joined Ting before the global switch to post-paid, you're very next bill will include only the taxes based on your usage. If you didn't use any data for the month, we will credit the $3.00 (S plan) back to you. The same theory applies to minutes and text messages.

My wife and I share phones on our account. When we talk to each other, are we both billed for the call? In other words, if I call my wife and talk for 5 minutes, will our charges be for 5 minutes or for 10 minutes?

The surcharge is in addition to the bucket. In mt experience, Ting's surcharges are less than what Sprint charges.

Hey Clark. As Bruce said, the roaming surcharges will be applied on top of the data usage you incur abroad and counts toward your buckets, so you'll see those megabytes reflected both on your data bucket and the roaming surcharges.
