Offer refurbished phones

The entry to using your service is a little high because we have to buy a new phone.  I'd love it if you offered refurbished phones for sale or if we could bring a used sprint phone onto your plan!

For me, it's not a matter of cost, but rather a matter of I already have a decent android tablet (a samsung galaxy tab) that i'd rather not replace at this point as it's doing it's job admirably, and none of the phones that ting offers at the moment are what i'd be after in an android phone... I admit the Samsung Galaxy SII is somewhat attractive, I would *much* rather have something like a galaxy nexus at the moment, or by the time i'm ready to set up a new plan, I'd like to get one of those quad-core tegra3 phones coming out latter this summer.

Hi Jon. Bringing Your Own Device (BYOD) is a popular request. We hope to offer it someday, but today there are business and technical reasons for requiring a Ting device.

Thanks for checking in!

Ben,

You really did not answer the initial question, the subject of this thread. He wants to have Ting offer refurbished devices, just as other carriers do. Is there any plans of doing this? To not only cut the cost for the customer, but to also cut the cost for investment of the device by Ting.

Hi Brentt! Ooops... it looks like it was a two part question, and I only answered the second part (..."if we could bring a used sprint phone onto your plan!")

To fully answer Jon's question: All of our devices fall under warranty, which means we don't really have a stock of previously owned / refurb'd devices yet. We've seen some refurb device opportunities from outside sources, but it's too early to comment on where that will end up.

So the official answer is: The idea of offering refurb devices is interesting to us and we're not in a position to do anything about it yet.

Have a great weekend,

Thank you for the response Ben! It's good to know that the idea is floating around and could possibly be implemented once Ting is around for a little longer.

I appreciate the answer, and I hope that you had a great weekend too!

I do not mean to bump this up to the top, but I assume that making a new thread about this would be even worse, lol.

I see that Ting is offering finally a refurbished phone, however, it is only the Optimus S as of now. Is there any chance of actually getting the devices page sorted out, where there is a drop down selection for new phones and refurbished phones? I would rather buy something that has been used, but fully functional and proven to be by Ting and the manufacturer, than a out the lot new phone. So, are there plans to incorporate the idea of selling refurbished phones some more, with a wider selection? BYOD is great, but for me, I'm not too interested in such.

Hey Brentt, you're kind of asking two questions there, so let me see what I can do to sort those out for you.

Making changes to and perfecting the website is something we're always looking at doing.

If we get to a point where we're carrying enough refurbished options to warrant it, introducing some sort of view function where you can separate new devices from refurbished ones is not at all unlikely.

Now regarding offering further refurbished phones themselves, I can tell you that are looking at other refurbished options. The response we've gotten regarding the refurbished Optimus S's has been tremendous, so while I can't confirm for certain - I can say that's a good chance we'll have more in the future.

If you're at all interested in the official word, our most recent blog post is probably the best place to look:
