Unofficial Android App

Brian Steere
posted this on June 13, 2012, 17:42

I have created an unofficial Ting Usage app for Android. It's up on the Play Store: http://l.3dgo.net/KGqN9N

Features

  • See overall usage and costs for the current billing cycle
  • See detailed usage information for the entire account
  • See overall usage for each device
  • See detailed usage information for each device
Detailed usage information is cached so if you want to see the most recent information, you will need to hit the refresh button.

Any feedback and such can be posted here.

Important Note

  • This works by scraping the account pages to pull usage information, so it will not save you any data compared to just visiting the site in a browser. Also, if Ting updates their site, it will probably break until I have a chance to fix it. I saw in another thread that they will be making usage downloads available so I will probably shift to using those when that happens. And if Ting ever releases a proper API that may allow for considerably more functionality.
Donations
I've gotten a few requests for donation info, so if you really want to donate (and it is completely unnecessary for you to do so) you can do so via Paypal. My address is dianoga7@3dgo.net.

Beta Testing
Occasionally I may need people to test the app before I release it to the wild. This is where you can find the absolute latest build.

Source Code

Source is now available: https://bitbucket.org/Dianoga/ting-android/overview

I promise nothing in terms of easy to use, or well-written or any of that jazz.

I do have one question though, why does your app need to read contact information?

When you view detailed usage it will try to match them with your contacts.

Sweet! Thanks for the app. This should work as a great stand-in at least until Ting comes out with an official Android app (and we'll see how well it works).

Excellent Job! Getting to the info was a bit non-intuitive the first time though. I had to press the back button on my phone to get to it? Maybe a login or submit button would work well. Great work too!

Hi Brian,

You beat us to it! Good for you. We'll have some folks check out the app soon. Of course we can't endorse an unofficial app but if you want to maintain it and people want to use it, that's cool by us.

We have started on our Android app but don't have a release date yet. We're also working on a fairly major update to the Dashboard which will likely muck up some of what you've done here with screen scraping.

The only small concern right now is you using the Ting logo and colour in the app icon. You've made it clear it's unofficial so we'll let it go for now, but we may need to ask you to change that if it causes confusion later on.

Feel free to contact me if you need anything. ken at ting dot com.

Cheers,

Ken.

Ken, Thanks for the general approval. If necessary I am more than happy to change the logo and colors. When you release your app, it is entirely likely mine will become irrelevant (which I look forward to).

You know, I've not yet become a Ting customer.  I've been looking at Ting and several (loosely termed) competitors, such as Republic Wireless, Straight Talk, T-Mo's new 30$plan, and a couple others.  Having spent time in the forums at each site, I was beginning to lean towards Ting.  This thread has cemented that for me.  I will be a Ting customer at the end of this month and I will be pointing my friends your direction.  As a software developer by day, and tinkerer by night, it has been a long time since I've seen a company take such a healthy attitude with their customers and community.  Every day I read in the news how some company is suing another over some ridiculous patent, and here's Ting saying basically, "ehh, you gave proper credit and did nothing malicious, so we'll roll with it for now, till our offerings are ready for the public".  I mean you spoke to the dev like a person, gave a reason for your small concern and even made guarded concession on that for now so long as it doesn't cause problems.  That is awesome.  More than awesome, it is a mature adult way to handle these things.  So refreshing in today's business world.  Kudos to Ken and the whole Ting staff.

Just downloaded this today - unfortunately it crashes immediately.  Well, actually, I can enter email and password, but it dies when it tries to download usage info from Ting (The "Updating" screen)

Really cool idea though.

When it crashes did you get an option to report the error? If you can do that it will hopefully give me the information I need to troubleshoot it.

Other than that, is it possible you put your username or password in incorrectly? I don't think that should cause it to crash but anything is possible.

Hey Sandra and Brian. I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with it, but we currently have a maintenance notice on ting.com right now to advise people of a network maintenance that's happening. I don't think it's the maintenance that's causing the problem, but more the notification bar we have at the top of each web page that alerts people about the maintenance.

My thinking is that since Brian's app is scraping our pages for usage detail, the notification bar might be tripping it up. Then again, I could be totally wrong... ;)

Anyhoo, thought I'd mention it as a possibility. Have a fantastic weekend all,

-Ben

I don't think it is the notifications. Those look to be pulled in separately via AJAX. I'm setting up my dev environment at home and will do some testing.

I see both reports and am working finding fixes.

Jared: Do you have any messages that show up as to or from nobody? Or two ting devices instead of numbers? I'm not sure what is causing your issue. I think I have a workaround, but I would be more comfortable if I knew what the actual problem was.

Sandra: Your issue seems to be related to parsing the account page. I'm probably going to need to build in some additional reporting capability to get to the bottom of it.

I'm thinking of changing how detailed usage works to break things down into potentially more useful information. My basic thought is this:

Tapping on Minutes or Messages takes you to a list with all the contacts you communicated with. It would show total message or talk time for each contact/number. If you tap on the contact it would expand to show each call/message or a daily accounting.

Also I may have a view that starts with a daily accounting and can be expanded into full details or contact aggregates.

Not sure if that made sense, but does anyone have any opinions?

July 2, 2012, 09:50

That could work. Or how about just inverting the list? That way the most recent information is shown at the top. Although the way you proposed would be handy as well. Keep up the great work mate! :)

I'm ambivalent - having the most recent at top would save some scrolling (both on the app and on the website) - but that's minor.  Maybe make it a toggle-able feature - since I think I would still like to look at things chronologically at time.

Either way - it's great as is.

Is there any way to display the total amount (ie 3+3+3+ 6 x # of devices)?, I know it's basic math and not hard to do, but it could be helpful. Thanks for the app otherwise.

Hi Brian,

A couple of days ago when I tried to do a reverse sort by date, it got a bit confused an sorted only by day of the month versus Month, then day.  So if your month contains both June and July billing, then some of the July dates will be considered older than some of the June dates... or at least that is what i think I saw.

I'll take a look at the sorting. My billing date happens to fall on the first of the month so that didn't happen to me.

Brian,

I have 2 phones, so I went to dashboard -> phone settings & clicked rename.  Calls to this renamed phone show up as to blank in your app.Perhaps you could pass the text or tart of the text if the destination is not a valid phone number.

I just updated and reverse sort appears to be fixed. You must be one of the very few who has their billing date at the first of the month.

Perhaps Ting could put another phone with usage on your dashboard or supply a development dashboard for testing your app.

I just released a new version which lays the groundwork for multiple device support. At this point I'm at something of a sticking point for building true multiple device support since I don't have multiple devices on my account.  If someone with multiple devices wants to send me a copy of the html source for the account page, I can see if there is an efficient way to show a device overview with usage.

This a great app. Thanks for the great work you've put into this. I have 2 feature requests, if possible. 1: put a link somewhere (maybe on screen or on the pop-up menu) to ting's account page or home page, so changes to the accounts can be made. 2: allow the app to be installed to the sd card. I run on the Kyocerya Milano currently, which has almost no internal storage, so the more that can be moved to the sd card, the better. In both requests, I don't know what kind work is involved. This app.is great as is and I will happily use it. These 2 features would just be icing on the cake. Thanks.

Mark,

Brian developed this unofficial app for his own use and has expanded it to make is more useful to others by adding support for multiple phones and making the detail sorting work for others.

Ting is getting ready to update their site which will likely break this app. Ting is also working on their own official Android app.

It may be best to wait to see what other goodies Ting has in store for us.

Also - I know Ting bills by calendar month (sort of) and we all know when our billing periods end, but can we have a countdown somewhere on the dash? Maybe something in the Overall Usage header, like "Overall Usage - x days until new billing cycle" ? Personally, it would help me decide if it's a good time of the month to watch my usage until the billing period ends, or if I should go over depending on how many more units I think I'll need until then.

One more thing - The 'devices' section at the bottom shows new header rows (Devices, Min, SMS, MB) for each device, taking up valuable space. It only needs to be shown once, in my opinion.

I was thinking about this. It is too bad there isn't some form of oAuth that could be used. It would probably help the app a lot if a server could do the actual collection of data and then the app could pull just the info it needed in a much cleaner format from the server. I'd be willing to provide the server but the problem is that the server would have to store user account info which just wouldn't work.

I guess we'll have to wait for the official one to get the best performance... your app is awesome until then, though.

I've started working on getting the app to work with the new dashboard. It's pretty slow going as the new dashboard does things in ways that make scraping somewhat more complicated and less efficient. Also, as I rework that I'm planning on building in a couple of the extra features people have asked for (like days until next bill and total estimated cost).

Kevin: I like the idea of a middle-man server doing the hard work, but I imagine most people wouldn't be happy passing their information through a third party. The server wouldn't have to actually store the account info, but it would need to use them and that would require additional trust from users. Really what we need is some kind of official API from Ting. They seem to already have some of the groundwork in place. The website notifications seem to use ajax json calls and most of the dashboard information is very nearly valid json already.

September 4, 2012, 11:04
User photo
Kevin Arnold
Ting Army

You're right, I was thinking it would store it to do scheduled updates of the data. So instead of just a simple middle-man, the server would try to keep the data up to date and the app would just pull from the server (with the ability to request an instant update.)

If it were going to happen, your way is probably better anyway. Just pass through the data and the server never actually stores the credentials or data. Either way, you are correct that it isn't an optimal way of doing things.

I have an appearance comment. Due to the colors used, I also initially misread the usage meters. When usage is over 50% in a bucket, the usage number is inside the blue line. Perhaps the text should change to black The eye is drawn to the Average number below the colored bar.

Thank you again for a great app. Ting should hire you and provide resources for an official version.

Ed and Bruce: Can you send me the html source of your dashboard page?

Bruce: Are your meters blue? Mine are yellow. I may have to see if I can force the color. I'll put some thought into it.

The minutes are now matching.

It seems that the phone needs to be shutoff and restarted (power reboot, just like microsoft ) to get the minutes on the bottom to match the minutes up top (refresh wasn't enough)

Ed,

Actually, my minutes fixed on their own without a reboot and now match. Perhaps Ting made some adjustment on the new dashboard.

i sen Brian a screenshot of my meters. I suspect the color varies depending on the theme settings on the phone.

I just checked my app. I used more minutes from yesterday. The summary appears to not have updated. I collected a screenshot & dashboard source. I will email that info to Brian later today.

Updated the test version again. Hopefully with a fix for the devices not updating. Also a couple of visual tweaks.

I just downloaded the app, and it's great. The only thing I would add, is # Days Until Next Bill.

Thomas,

I am running the latest test version from the link in the forum posting above yours. It shows the days remaining in the upper right corner.

I don't see any days remaining in the upper right corner of mine either and I have the latest version as well.  Strange...
