So I ordered my LG Marquee and I wonder if I can upgrade it from Gingerbread to ICS....If so, how can I do it?

Not at the moment. Our Android update blog post (at https://ting.com/blog/is-my-android-update-ready-yet/) might give you an idea on OS updates on Ting though.

Like Andrew said, there's no ICS update BUT there is a really great mod out there. CTMod: http://androidforums.com/marquee-all-things-root/540509-rom-sprint-boost-ctmod-3-68-06-27-12-a.html

Makes the Marquee run much faster and includes some very fluid UI elements and animations. While it's not the latest and greatest, it's certainly worth updating IMHO. I used the download for Sprint. Note: This requires a root. Be sure NOT to update your LG Marquee to the latest software update (ZVC) as it does not allow the AIO root  script (or any other) to run.

As a slight correction to Matthew's post, you CAN root an updated Marquee. Well, sort of. You have to downgrade first, which is a pain. I know...I did it on a phone tonight. At least it was possible to do the downgrade.

Hey, I just ordered 2 LG marquee phones and the CTMod seems GREAT! But then I went to the link from Matthew and found this from the author of this download and a Ting customer :( I'm brand new to smartphones can someone please advise?
"so your not using sprint or boost but your trying to use a sprint rom? I don't know what kind of changes ting requires, each carrier is different, even the ones that still use sprints network. and if you did get cell signal I doubt MMS would work for you since the apn's built into mms.apk would be wrong.

I think the stock Ting ROM is just the Sprint ROM as all the Sprint junk shows up, Sprint ID, that Sprint Now screen, etc. It really looks like Sprint. As a side note, the device I bought refurbished from Ting (great deal for around $40 shipped with a coupon) and it says "boostmobile" on it  So yeah, it's the franken-phone.

I can use the phone just fine for both voice and data on Ting with the rooted stock Sprint ZVC ROM and on CTMod 3.68 too. It's just that sometimes if I flash custom ROMs a lot to play with various versions the phone loses some setting and it stops working until I go back to the stock (rooted) Sprint ROM and then back to a custom ROM. Does it have anything to do with the PRL settings or APN?

I don't really care for MMS working, I have TXT/SMS turned off for my phone anyway (via the Ting web site) as I use Google Voice for that."

Ting is a Sprint MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) and the new phones ordered from Ting are just normal Sprint phones. The refurbs are somewhat different as they may come from other MVNOs.

Well that sucks there not "sprint" phones, I think. How do I know what MVNO LG Marquee referb one I ordered, Ting never disclosed this. Don't the Ting new phones have the same bloatware, ie. Sprint ID as Ting referbs? Can I still root it? Matthews link did have a root download for Sprint and Boost.

Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile are both totally owned by Sprint. New phones from Ting come in shiny new Sprint boxes and contain ALL the same software as you would get from the same phone purchased from a Sprint store. There wouldn't be much difference with a Marquee that was purchased directly from Sprint or from Boost other than there would be less or no Sprint specific Apps on the Boost phone.

Your Marquee should still be rootable and you do want to use the ROM for a Sprint version rather than Boost. Neither Boost nor Virgin allow voice or text while roaming.

Ok thanks.....So do I download  and install CTMOD from the phone on to it's micro SD card or plug the phone into my Linux computer and drag and drop the files into the phone's Micro SD card? I just read another post about CTMOD

https://help.ting.com/entries/22350971-lg-marquee-ctmod

So after installing the Sprint CTMOD, the post also says it will break MMS and someone else says there is a fix on this other post even though it's for the Optimus S, should I use that post to fix the broken MMS?

@William

If you haven't rooted a phone before you should read as much as you can -- watch YouTube videos -- read some more before you start. Forgive me if you have past rooting experience but you can easily end up with a non functional phone.

Good luck and have fun. Let us know how you make out.

Remember, if you have a lot on your SD Card (Games, etc) now, upgrading to ICS kills that ability. I'm pretty happy with Gingerbread on my phone. ICS ruined my tablet.

I just ordered this phone used to BYOD to Ting and was wondering if anyone managed to run an official update to 4.0.4. Wikipedia says the Marquee is upgradable to 4.0.4 with the LG Support Tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-Phone-Tools/Others/LGMobile-Sup...
