How difficult is it to bring over a Verizon phone to Ting?

I've been a Ting customer since April 2012 and have an LG Optimus S.  This phone really doesn't cut it for me anymore.  I have a friend who is upgrading his phone and willing to sell me his Droid Bionic on the Verizon network.  I'm usually can figure stuff out and also have some friends who are really savvy with unlocking, rooting, etc. that would probably help.  Ideally I'd use my LG as donor phone and bring over the Bionic, then sell my LG here to someone else who wanted a cheap phone or to use as a donor.

The first question is how easy/hard (time, success rate, knowledge level) is it to bring over a verizon phone to Ting?

Second question, does using LG Optimus as a donor then render the phone useless?

My back up plan is to wait until BYOSD is available then buy a used Sprint phone.

Your feedback is appreciated.

At the moment, there is no BYOD for Verizon, so the Bionic cannot currently be directly activated on Ting using its native MEID. This means that you need to have a donor phone from Ting to clone credentials over from (e.g. your Optimus S). This may or may not be easy, there has only been one or two known Verizon phones that have been brought to Ting. I would google around for flashing instructions about moving the driod bionic to other cell phone companies. That should give you a good idea of how difficult things are. Using the Optimus S's credentials does make the phone useless and you cannot sell it (the MEID is being used). You need to destroy it or lock it in a drawer.

You would have to look through some of the posts, but I believe Verizon phones have been sucessfully brought over.

What you are talking about is cloning the Optimus S to the Bionic. Once you do that, you can't sell the Optimus, technically it's being used on Ting. If at some point you BYOD the Bionic, (and set back to factory, uncloned the Optimus), you could then sell the Optimus freely.

You would not have LTE on the Bionic, just 1x and 3G. Assuming you can get the HA/AAA paswwords and MSL off the Bionic, it should be a simple process.

Thanks for your replies.  I'll start googling for flashing instructions.  When I do a search for Verizon on the Ting forums I didn't see any posts from people who have actually done this with a verizon phone but saw a few posts where people said it was possible due to Verizon using CDMA.  I am aware that 4G would not be available as the capabilities of the new phone are limited to the capabilities of the donor phone, since I'm mostly on WiFi I can live with that.  I guess what I decide to do will  depend on how cheap I can get the new phone and whether it is worth experiementing.

I would also like to hear from anyone who has had success bringing a Verizon phone over to Ting, or has been unsuccessful.

Thanks,

Rich

There is at least one confirmed report that a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2 has been successfully reprogrammed to work on Ting.

Desiderio,

The LTE spectrum that Verizon uses is in the 700MHz range. Sprint's LTE spectrum is in the 1900MHz range.

So, the Verizon phone will probably work with 2G and 3G, but will not have LTE capability.
