Completing Your iPhone Activation

Isabel Matwawana
posted this on October 29, 2013 13:07

The following final activation steps are intended for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 running any iOS.

After the phone has been added to your account:

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Within 2-3 minutes the phone should start a Hands Free Activation on its own
  4. When the activation completes, your phone is ready for use

If your phone does not start working immediately, follow the steps below.

1. Check the MEID number and confirm that it's the same as the one listed in your Ting account. To find the MEID on your phone:

  • Tap the Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Tap About
  • Look for the MEID - do not confuse this with the IMEI
  • Look for ICCID and make sure it's correct (iPhone 5 only)

NOTE: Your MEID will be listed in the hex form on your phone; it's listed in both forms in your Ting account on your Device Settings page underneath the picture of the phone.

2. Make sure you're not in a roaming area.

3. Make sure that voice and data are enabled on your Ting account.

4. Make sure that data is enabled on your phone. To confirm this:

  • Tap the Settings app
  • Tap Cellular (on iOS 6, tap General, then Cellular)
  • Make sure the ON/OFF button for Cellular Data is in the ON position

5. Try running a network reset:

  • Tap the Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Tap Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings

6. Try running a profile update:

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Tap the phone app
  • Dial # # 873283 #
  • Tap Call
  • Starting Service Update message will appear - tap OK
  • If update is successful Service Update Complete message will appear after about a minute - tap OK

**If update is not successful Service Update Fails message will appear, make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and try again; if this happens again try running a factory reset.

**If the update is successful but you only have voice/text and not data, try running a factory reset.

7. Wait 3-6 hours. Some users have found that waiting 3-6 hours after attempting activation gives the phone sufficient time to connect to the network and the phone activates on its own during this time. If your profile update was successful but you still aren't able to activate, it may help to wait a few hours prior to trying a factory reset.

Factory Reset

If you've tried all of the steps above and your phone is still not activating, you'll need to run a factory reset.

Factory Reset

  1. Back up your phone
  2. Tap the Settings app
  3. Tap General
  4. Tap Reset
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  6. Enter your passcode if prompted
  7. Erase iPhone
  8. Erase iPhone

The phone will reboot and you will be prompted to set up your phone again, which you can do as a new device or restore it from a previous backup in iTunes or iCloud.

Picture Messaging Settings

The following steps will allow your phone to send and receive mms messages between your iPhone and other non-Apple devices

  1. Ensure that "Can send picture and video messages" is enabled for the phone on your Ting account
  2. Once mms messaging has been enabled on the account, wait 6 hours (if you've already had it enabled for more than 6 hours, move on to the next step)
  3. Restart your phone

If mms messaging still isn't working on your phone, run a profile update:

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Tap the phone app
  • Dial # # 873283 #
  • Tap Call
  • Starting Service Update message will appear - tap OK
  • If update is successful Service Update Complete message will appear after about a minute - tap OK

If mms messaging still isn't working on your phone, run a factory reset:

  • Back up your phone
  • Tap the Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Tap Reset
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  • Enter your passcode if prompted
  • Erase iPhone
  • Erase iPhone

If you have tried all the options and are still having problems, get in touch with us here so we can help you out.

Is a SIM card necessary for the iPhones? In the 4S, at least, there is a SIM card slot.

Yay! I got it working. Here's what I did for those having any issues. It didn't work initially after activating on Ting's website and restarting. I de-activated it on the website, re-activated it again and restarted the phone. Still no luck. Finally, after the third restart of my phone, the no service message at the top of the phone screen went away and it started searching before then activating. It may possibly be that I'm in a low coverage area. Make sure you verify a good signal and keep trying.

Just got the email to start up service with Ting for my iPhone 4! It's not working. I restarted my phone and it was still attached to Sprint. So then I backed up all my stuff on iCloud and Factory Reset it. Still connected to Sprint!

I did not formally disconnect my Sprint service yet my calls and texts cannot be completed because my Network is unavailable.. but Ting isn't showing up. Do I need to dial into Sprint and dis-connect my service with them? It seems it's already disconnected, yet showing their Network and not Tings.. What should I do??? So far I have 0 service from anywhere.

I know TING says that it could take up to 24 hours for your phone number to port over and for your iPhone to be on TING, but I'm wondering what kind of times other customers are seeing?

I've got my device registered and have done a factory reset. Still seeing Sprint. I'm not worried, just curious.

Titus, are you talking about the Sprint logo at the top of the screen? That will say Sprint even with ting service. As for times, I've ported 3 numbers to ting and each time it took from less than an hour to no more than 2 hours.

I was unable to activate my old iPhone 4S. The number assigned and the voicemail setup without issue and was quick, but the phone would not relinquish its old sprint number (that number was moved over to ting a month or so ago). The network resets and multiple power offs and extended offs did not correct it. I ran a full backup in itunes, removed the usb cable, then used the reset instructions to wipe the device, went through the initial iphone setup (did not restore the backup yet) and the phone showed 'searching' in the upper left for about 3 minutes before it popped up a window that said it was activating. Another minute and a popup that the activation was successful followed by another tense minute before the 'searching' in the upper left was replaced with bars. A few moments later, it lit up 'Sprint' next to the bars and all my test messages from a few hours ago came in. Outbound and inbound calls started working near immediately at this point. This all appears to be the iphone just not releasing the number (I found other reports of people having this happen on the 4s when trying to move numbers all within sprint and the only fix they found was doing the full reset). ios 6.1.3 (I probably should have tried going to ios7 first to see if it acted better)

A followup to my post above.

I was able to run a full restore of the iPhone 4s that I took before doing the full wipe and it did restore all my apps and data.  The new ting number stayed active on the device and all appears to be well.

Being able to test it out for only $6 a month with no other extra charges other than what I use is pretty awesome.

Hi. I recently received an email from you guys stating that I could now BYOD my iPhone 4S over to Ting (My pervious service provider was Sprint). I was quite pleased upon receiving such message, seeing how much money my brother was saving since he started using Ting. I filled out all the information on the website and waited for the activation email. I received it a few hours later, clicked the link, and followed the instructions. I restarted my phone and waited for the hands free activation message to pop up. It never did. I then restarted it two more times with no luck. I reset my network settings, made sure my data and cellular where turned on and still luck. I then checked my device settings on my Ting account and it has my MEID listed wrong. I'm thinking this may be the problem? Is there a way for me to correct it myself? The only thing I haven't tried is to reset my phone to factory settings, which I'll have to wait until I get home to try. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Also, I am unable to send/receive texts and calls. Thanks!

Alfredo - my meid on the devices page at ting didn't match up with the meid showing on my phone either (it looked like the 99000-- number in the image above.) I was sure I had entered it right and it wasn't until the full factory reset that it tried to activate. I was however getting a new number rather than transferring a different number so your situation may be different. I can say that I was able to do a restore of the phone after the factory reset and new activation and it brought back all my data and contacts but with the new ting activation. I waited to do the restore until after the iPhone was fully working with ting (there is an option to restore as part of the activation that I did not do)

I should add that even now after activation and everything is working, my phone shows the 99000xxxx meid number while the ting device settings page shows a number that looks like: ESN/MEID: 2566914184087xxxxxxx

Hey Alfredo!

The difference in MEID is nothing to be concerned about. Each phone has 2 versions of the MEID, namely the DEC and the HEX. Our system will always default the MEID to the DEC which I'm sure is what you are seeing on your account.

When you get home I would recommend trying the factory reset in an effort to get the phone active. If you continue to experience trouble with it please get in touch by calling 1-855-846-4389.

Factory reset +1.  Tried all night Friday with no luck (even drove up to park under a Sprint tower to ensure that wasn't the problem).  Backed everything up today and did the hard reset, restored everything and presto, first phone call worked.

Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU TING!!  Just made my life 100x better since I joined last month and had to inform my wife she her could no longer call/text with her iPhone 4S (I wanted to switch 8 months ago but had a hard time pulling the trigger over that one issue)

I bought a factory refurbished sprint iPhone 4s from eBay (10/30/13) and activated it on Friday the 1st  (11/01/13) with no issues.  All I had to do was enter the MEID and restart.  I believe I restarted twice and the second time Sprint came up from unavailable and it was good to go.  It probably would have worked the first time but I had mobile data turned off.  No issues other than the known MMS thing which can wait.  This is only to give one successful port experience  for those wondering.

Any recommended place to buy a brand new Sprint-unlocked  iPhone 4S?
Since iPhones battery cannot be replaced and its  life expectancy is about 2 years... I would
prefer to invest more on a brand new iPhone 4s, instead of getting a refurbished one with a battery that would last less than a year.
Please advice.

Hi Raul,

There are a number of places to get this device online. eBay and Amazon sell new versions of this phone, from Sprint, however the prices would be that little bit higher as they are off contract prices. If this is not an issue for you please click here to view the eBay list and see how the prices take your fancy.

I have an interesting question.

My wife and I moved back from Japan recently with two iPhones 4S. The company we went through was SoftBank, and when we turn off Airplane mode, they just detect whatever network is strongest, either T-Mobile or Sprint. I've seen it come up with both. Can we unlock our iPhones from the SoftBank carrier and activate them through Ting?

Susan DeMiglio: I just bought a 4 to test out with Ting, and I'm not updating it to IOS7. My 4S took a slight performance hit when I updated to IOS7 (but Wifi was ok), so I'm assuming the 4 would fare worse. So to answer your question, it is possible to not update to IOS7 and stay with IOS6 if you choose to.

Brought an iPhone 4S over from Sprint. Still a bit upset that they wouldn't let me SIM unlock for full domestic use on any carrier. I am however extremely happy to be with ting. Tried all of the above activation steps but the only one that was successful was the Factory Reset. A point that you might include in the above instructions (since this was the problem I ran into after the reset): wifi must be turned off for ting to activate once reset. I had left my wifi on in order to restore my backup from iCloud. The activation would not complete until the wifi was turned off, and only at that time did if finally fully activate.

Question, now that the iPhone is in beta, can we be expecting an iOS ting app? Hoping we might. Many thanks!

So easy, you'd think there would be a catch.  Already having an account with ting, I followed ting's link to ebay sprint devices and bought a 4s at a cut rate price from a reputable seller using paypal.  Once my phone was delivered, I spent less than a minute following the basic instructions and my phone was working.  It took longer to go through apple's basic setup than it took to activate my phone with ting.

Just added an iPhone 4s purchased from Glyde. Started phone configuration so we could find the MEID. Went through the normal Ting activation and got a new number. Went back to the phone and it said it was unsuccessful signing on to the network. Clicked "Try again" and it successfully joined the network. Made a successful call to the landline and the new Ting number showed up on caller ID. Very easy, other than getting to the MEID.

YEA!!! now the whole family is with TING!  I had previously brought over 3 devices, a Sanyo flip, HTC Evo, and Samsung gS2; activating was extremely simple for all 3.  I just saw today that iphone 4/4s has been in BETA testing and instantly logged in to my account and ported over my son's 4s.  Was a little saddened that I received the message that it could take up to 7 days, but within a few hours received the "SUCCESS!" email.  I couldn't wait to get home from work to activate it.  I did end up having to reset/erase/restore from backup; but as soon as it rebooted I performed a test call and test text and SHMOWZOW!! DONE!

Re. Picture Messaging ("picture messaging will not work between iPhones on Ting and non-Apple devices, but this functionality is expected soon. I just successfully moved my wife's iphone 4s to Ting. The one thing that I had to do that I didn't see mentioned in this thread was to update the profile. The procedure to update the profile on an iphone is here: http://support.sprint.com/support/tutorial/Update_data_profile_Apple_iPhone_4S_16GB_Preowned/25219-1390-3. After doing that, I was able to send/receive calls, send/receive sms and get 3g connectivity.

The one latent problem I have (other than not being able to send mms messages to non-iphone users) is that on my Ting dashboard, her iphone shows up under my devices as "Not yet activated". The biggest problem with that is I cannot manage any of the features on this phone, such as disabling data or sms, or configuring call forwarding. Any ideas?

Regarding the profile update, there were/are issues that we are still testing because some individuals reported the inability to connect to data. This is something that we are hoping to work through in the beta phase. As a result, we are not asking people to perform the profile update at this time.

On the plus side, I'm very happy that it was able to work for you Norman. We'll reach out to you very soon to see if we can figure out what's happening with your account.

Disregard!  It activated and connected to the network overnight.

I earlier reported that my iPhone 4 came over easily.  I have since noticed a few issues: (1)  there seems to be a delay (at least one day maybe more) in data usage showing up in Ting's dashboard.  (2) When I first tested the personal hotspot (tethering) functionality, my iphone wasn't being recognized (it wasn't being discovered by the computer I was trying to tether).  I had to reset the iPhone's network settings (settings-->general-->reset-->reset network settings) and then it worked. (3) I thought Ting's wording above, "picture messaging will not work between iPhones on Ting and non-Apple devices" implied picture messaging might work between my Ting iPhone and my non-Ting AT&T iPhone. So far I haven't gotten it to work.

Can I tether with the IPhone to my other devices?

Sure!  Ting does not charge extra for this service--just the megabytes used in the hotspot activity.

On the Ting web site, under "Your Account--Device Settings--Megabytes," make sure your Ting iPhone is set  to "Allow other devices to tether to this device".

Then in iOS7, go to Settings--Personal Hotspot--toggle to ON, and follow the instructions on the iPhone screen. Presumably you would choose "wifi", and on the tethered device choose the iPhone from the wifi settings displayed.

In case it might be useful to others, here is my experience.

I bought a used 4s on eBay. Went through the Ting BYOD process and got a new number because I wasn't ready to move my regular number to the 4s until I knew it would work properly. Everything went well with that activation -- incoming and outgoing calls, 3g data.

Restored a backup of my previous (Verizon) 4s to the new phone and that seemed fine. Satisfied that I could safely move my main number to the new phone, I called Ting CS and had them do it because there were several numbers being moved to various phones. The number wouldn't switch on the phone.

Multiple network resets didn't do it. Finally resorted to a factory reset, which got the correct number on the phone. At that point I could make outgoing calls, but nothing was incoming. Also only 1x data, even in areas that other Ting phones show as strong 3g. After leaving it overnight I found that incoming calls worked, but still 1x data.

Seemed like a PRL issue, so I tried the ##873283# profile update. That changed my PRL from 31001 to 4598 and immediately had 3g and incoming/outgoing calling. One more iTunes restore to get my apps and settings back and I now have a working phone.

I was stoked when found out Ting finally supported iPhone especially since my Verizon control just ended Oct 31st.  I jumped on craigslist and bought a Sprint 4S.  I followed the instructions to port my number, rebooted and walla I'm on Ting!  I didn't care that MMS wouldn't work but I can report that I did receive a MMS so it appears to be fully functional in my area.  No the whole family is saving money!

Added an iPhone 4S today. No issues, was the easiest device addition thus far and required no phone call to support.

Is there an ETA on when MMS will function? One unfortunate behavior is if you attempt to send MMS to someone and it fails you get no specific failure message. It shows in Messages as if it was sent successfully. In contrast, on my Galaxy S3 Android phone it will report an overt error when trying to send MMS to the iPhone. I haven't tested iPhone-to-iPhone yet.

Today I Pported my last active Verizon number to a Sprint iPhone 4s I got off eBay.  The iPhone activated without problem after about 2 hours.  Receiving MMS from a ting Samsung Galaxy S3 is working fine.  Sending MMS from the 4s is not working yet (as expected).  Everything else working as it should be.  Thanks ting.

So, Boost Mobile (Sprints own MVNO) now sells brand new iPhone 4s devices for use on their pay-as-you-go plan.  Can these devices be purchased at retail and activated on Ting?  I can buy a used device from Glyde or another partner, but would jump at the option to buy new. I know it is still beta, but hoping this (and the 5C/5S) option is available in the future.  Thanks.

Just want to add my thoughts on the process.  I'm already a Ting subscriber but had a Galaxy Nexus before the iPhone.

I bought a new iPhone 4S with a clean ESN from eBay.  Once it arrived, the whole process took less than 10 minutes.  I booted up the phone and went through the initial set up so I could find the MEID number, entered the MEID into Ting to activate a new device, and transferred my existing number to the new phone.  So far, so good.  Then I rebooted the iPhone and within 2 minutes service was connected.  No problems at all.  Easiest activation ever!

Calls, texts, and data are working great.  I haven't tried MMS but since it isn't oficially supported yet, it's whatever.  I can wait!

So excited, we have been waiting for Ting to support the iPhone! Just wanted to add that the ##873283# profile update is what did the trick for us.

All of these success stories! It's so great to hear that the beta testing is going so well! Of course there are some kinks that need to be worked out but for the most part it's all going smoothly and we couldn't have done it without all of your help folks!

I'm glad for this beta, and I'd I 'd like to see the Picture Mail working soon!

By the way, is anyone else getting their Tingified iPhones to exchange picture mail with other Apple iPhones?  My tingified iPhone 4 running iOS 7 does not.

Just wanted to drop a note and say, got my 4s working in about 30 seconds.  Xfer'd number form my GS2, rebooted and the hone started working almost immediately.  Thanks for the easy setup Ting.

And I have no issues with MMS, i have been able to successfully send and recieve picture messages between my wifes GS2 and the iPhone on more than 1 occasion.

I was able to activate an iPhone 4, I bought used on from gatorwireless eBay for $120.00 and looks brand new, and port a Google voice number to the service. I tried all of the activation steps listed but a factory reset was what worked in the end. I bet it was because of the number port.

Just wanted to add another success story-  I bought a used iPhone from amazon's warehouse deals, from opening the box to making my first call took less than 5 minutes.  Couldn't have been any easier to activate!

I have swapped all [three] my ting phones to iphone 4S successfully without a glitch. Everything works great. Just eagerly waiting for iphone 5S support -- would love to see that happen sooner than later. Any ideas when that might come in ?

Thanks.

FWIW- I thought I'd also add that I can send and receive picture messages.  I tried it with a colleague who has an android phone on ting and with another who has android phone on another network.
