Activating your Samsung Galaxy J3 & J3 Emerge

This guide will help you connect your Samsung Galaxy J3 or J3 Emerge to our CDMA network once you activate it from your Ting account. If you haven't already activated a phone number have a look at our official Ting activation guide.

Connecting your phone to the network

This guide will help with inserting the SIM for your Samsung Galaxy J3 phone. The SIM is placed under the battery once it is removed.

In our finding your SIM card guide, we note that the CDMA SIM used is the Ting nano SIM type C6. To connect your phone to the network, we need to perform a carrier reset, profile and PRL update. These steps will activate your phone when done in a CDMA coverage area.

Carrier reset

  1. From the home screen, tap the Phone icon and open the dialer
  2. Dial ##72786#
  3. Tap YES and the device will restart and begin the Hands-Free Activation process automatically
  4. Once the Hands-Free Activation is complete, tap OK.
  5. Once the PRL is updated, tap OK
  6. The device will verify if a firmware update is available. If an update is available, follow the steps to download and install the update. Otherwise, tap OK
  7. Review the Attention message and tap OK
  8. The device will restart one more time and should be connected to the network
    **If the phone then runs a PRL update on its own please skip to the Profile update**

PRL update

  1. Enter Settings by tapping the icon on the home screen swipe down bar or via apps
  2. Scroll to the System section and tap System Update
  3. Tap Update PRL
  4. The phone will search and update - Once complete tap OK

Profile update

  1. Enter Settings by tapping the icon on the home screen swipe down bar or via apps
  2. Scroll to and tap System updates
  3. Tap Update Profile
  4. The phone will search and update - Once complete tap OK


Once done running the steps above, test your connection and ensure it is working. Here are some troubleshooting guides just in case you have any trouble with connecting calls, texting or data.

If you have tried all the options and are still having problems, please get in touch. If all troubleshooting fails, we may ask that you back up the phone to run a factory reset. If needed, here are steps to do so. Please ensure that you have the login credentials for the Google account used on the phone or have disabled Device Protection to ensure you can access the phone once it resets.

Hardware factory reset

  1. With the device turned off, press and hold the Volume up key
  2. While holding down the Volume Up key, press and hold the Home key
  3. While holding both the Volume Up and Home keys, press and hold the Power key. Release all three keys when the Android logo appears on the screen
  4. On the Android system recovery screen, press the Volume Down key to scroll to and highlight wipe data/factory reset
  5. With wipe data/factory reset highlighted, press the Power key. The previous Google username and password will be required to set up this device if Device Protection was not disabled
  6. Press the Volume Down key to scroll to Yes -- delete all user data, and then press the Power key
  7. Once the wipe is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now
  8. The device will restart

Factory reset from settings

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps
  2. Tap Settings > Backup and reset > Factory data reset
  3. Review the information provided. If you have inserted SD card, select the Format SD card checkbox if you also want to delete the data on your microSD card. Then, tap Reset Phone
  4. Touch DELETE ALL to delete all information and downloaded apps. If you have a security lock set on the device, you will be prompted to enter the lock information before proceeding. Tap Continue after entering the password then tap Delete All.
  5. The phone will power off and restart after removing your personal data and restoring the Android OS to its original state.

Activating Wi-Fi calling

Note: Currently available on the J3 Emerge only

Before activating Wi-Fi Calling, make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. The Wi-Fi Calling feature does not need to be enabled on your Ting account before it can be enabled on the phone. From your Ting account, the wifi calling feature will only show up for supported phones.

You will see Wi-Fi calling enabled symbol wifi calling status icon on the status bar when Wi-Fi Calling is active, or Wi-Fi calling disabled symbol wifi call dropped status icon if Wi-Fi Calling is set up but you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network.

  1. Once the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, from the home screen, swipe down the Status bar
  2. Tap the Settings icon
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi Calling switch ON if not already ON
  4. Register the E911 address by verifying the displayed location information is correct or enter the correct information. Note: If a Location service disabled window appears, tap ENABLE, tap to enable the Location switch, then tap the Back key
  5. The phone will automatically add the current Wi-Fi network to the WI-FI Calling Networks list. Wi-Fi Calling is now set up. Note: The location information can be updated as needed by tapping Update Registered Location

To disable Wi-Fi Calling, tap the Wi-Fi Calling switch OFF and this will save your stored Wi-Fi Calling Settings. To completely deactivate Wi-Fi Calling, tap the Menu icon found in the top right corner and indicated by 3 dots. Deactivating Wi-Fi calling from the menu will remove all the information you saved when you set up Wi-Fi Calling on your device.

When using Wi-Fi calling, the phone app icons differ slightly. You will tap this icon  wifi calling dial icon  to place a call, and tap this icon to end a call  wifi calling end icon
