1. What are Multimedia Messages?

Picture, video and group messages are the most common form of multimedia message (MMS), but really any text sent with an attachment is an MMS message.

2. Do I need a data connection to send and receive MMS?

Yes, you need to be connected to the cellular data network to send and receive MMS.

3. Can I send and receive MMS over Wi-Fi?

No, MMS messages require a cellular data connection unless you are using a 3rd party app.

On Android and Windows phones you'll need to download a 3rd party app and the person you want to send messages to will also need to be using that app.

iOS devices come with iMessage as a native app which allows for MMS over Wi-Fi as long as you're sending to another person with an iOS device who also has iMessage enabled. If iMessages are disabled on either phone, or you're sending to a non-iPhone device, then you will need to have Data enabled to send an MMS.

4. How am I billed for MMS?

There is no surcharge for sending or receiving MMS, but you are billed for the usage. That usage includes the amount of cellular data that's transmitted on smartphones. On feature phones, it includes the data used and a single text message.

5. How do I send MMS?

Sending and receiving MMS is handled through the same messaging app on your phone that is used for text messaging.

6. Can MMS be turned on and off?

For CDMA devices, yes. MMS can be enabled and disabled from within the Device Settings tab in your Ting account. With MMS disabled, MMS messages will come through as a text message with a link to download the attachment.

MMS cannot be disabled for GSM devices.

7. How many people can I add to a group message?

The maximum amount of recipients for one group message is 10.

8. What should I do if MMS isn’t working?

If MMS isn’t working:

  1. If you have a CDMA device, check your Ting account and ensure that your phone "Can access the Internet" and "Can send and receive pictures & video messages."
    • NOTE: This is automatically enabled on GSM devices and the feature doesn't show up in the control panel.
  2. Confirm that you have a data connection on your phone--a data connection is required for picture messaging unless you're using a third party messaging app.

A Note About Some CDMA Feature Phones

As of April 30, 2014, picture and video messaging is no longer an offered service on select CDMA feature phones (flip phones and other non-smart phones). This means that you won't be able to send or receive picture or video or other media messages in the default messaging feature of affected devices. This does not affect CDMA smartphones.
