Disabling Wi-Fi and Enabling Data

Last updated by Isabel M

For many devices, it's necessary to disable Wi-Fi and enable data prior to attempting over-the-air updates such as Profile and PRL updates or a Carrier Reset. The pathways to these options vary from phone to phone but below are some of the more common places you'll find these settings in different smartphone operating systems.

Example 1

This is a fairly common and super easy pathway to Wi-Fi and data settings in an Android phone:

  1. Tap Apps and then Settings
  2. Tap Wi-Fi and Mobile data to toggle them on and off

Example 2

Here, getting to the data settings requires one extra step. This applies to a lot of Android devices running ICS or Jelly Bean:

  1. Tap Apps and then Settings
  2. Go to the Connections tab if you're not there
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi ON/OFF button to disable
  4. Then tap Data usage
  5. Check the Mobile data box

Example 3

In some cases, you'll be able to get to the Wi-Fi and data options by using the quick menu of selected settings:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to show notifications
  2. Tap the apps square at the top right to take you to the quick menu of settings
  3. Tap Wi-Fi and Mobile Data options to toggle them on and off

Older Android Phones

Android phones running Gingerbread or older often have a slightly longer pathway to finding these settings. The most common is as follows:

  1. Go to Apps and then Settings
  2. Tap Wireless & networks
  3. Uncheck Wi-Fi
  4. Scroll to Mobile network
  5. Check the Data option which may be listed as 3G Data or Mobile data or Data enabled
