Completing Activation on the CDMA Network

The following steps are intending for the majority of CDMA Kyocera devices running Android software.

The first thing you will need to do is ensure that 3G/LTE (if you have an LTE device), voice, and text messaging are all working properly on your device. To do this, a Carrier Wipe, and Profile & PRL update are required. Please follow the steps below.

For some of these updates you'll need your Master Subsidy Lock or MSL--this is a six-digit code provided to you by Ting in your activation email; you can also find this information in Device Settings in your Ting account online.

1. Carrier Wipe

  1. Disable Wi-Fi and enable data (some LTE devices do not require this)
  2. Open the dialer
  3. Dial # # 72786 #
  4. Enter your device <MSL> if prompted
  5. Touch "OK", phone will restart

**Note: this does not work for the Kyocera Rise.

2. Profile Update

  1. Disable Wi-Fi and enable data (some LTE devices do not require this)
  2. Touch the Application icon
  3. Touch Settings
  4. System update
  5. Update profile
  6. Tap OK when complete

3. PRL Update

  1. Disable Wi-Fi and enable data (some LTE devices do not require this)
  2. Touch the Application icon
  3. Touch Settings
  4. System update
  5. Update profile
  6. Tap OK when complete

Once your device restarts, 3G/LTE data, voice, and text messaging should be enabled.

If you have problems during this process, there may be some additional configuration required. Please take a look at the steps outlined here.  If you have tried all the options and are still having problems, get in touch.

Completing Activation on the GSM Network

These are the manual steps for setting up data, MMS (picture/video/group messaging), and the personal hotspot (tethering) on your Kyocera device.

1. Reset APN's to Default

Before beginning these directions, insert your activated Ting GSM X1 SIM card.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap More networks (under Connections tab, or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information)
  3. Mobile or Cellular networks
  4. Access Point Names
  5. Tap the Menu icon (located near + or Add icon)
  6. Tap Reset to default

Important: Before you begin entering the access point name settings below, please check the field for the APN Protocol and the APN Roaming Protocol to see if the option 'IPv4/IPv6' is present. If so, step 2 below is all you will need to enter into the phone for data and MMS.

**Skip to step 3 and 4 if your phone does NOT have the option 'IPv4/IPv6' and enter two separate APN profiles.

2. Add Ting Data/MMS APN Profile (IPv4/IPv6)

You should already be in the access point name section, if so, skip to step #5.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap More networks (under Connections tab, or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information)
  3. Mobile or Cellular networks
  4. Access Point Names
  5. Add a new APN (Menu or + icon)
  6. Enter APN settings

    • APN: wholesale
    • APN type: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet,dun
      • If there is a free form field, enter the above exactly as written without spaces
      • If your device has a series of check boxes rather than a free form field, check all the boxes that correspond with the values listed above.
        • For example: if your device has checkboxes for default, mms, supl, wap and ia, check only default, mms and supl.
    • MMSC: http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
    • MCC: 310 (should already be set)
    • MNC: 260 (should already be set)
    • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    • APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
  7. Tap the Menu icon (3 dots) icon
  8. Tap Save
  9. Select Ting Data as your APN
  10. Restart your device and wait for it to find the Ting network (this may take a minute or so)

For the Kyocera Rise, all you have to do to clear the network settings is go to the dialer and enter ##25327#.  The access code is (removed).

Hey there Nolan!  Thanks for that.  Everyone has a different access code; it's available in your online account in Device Settings, labeled MSL.

The access code (in this case) is different from the MSL. For the carrier wipe and debug menus the code is always 777468 (SPRINT).
