Completing Your iPhone 4 and 4S Activation

The following final activation steps are intended for the iPhone 4, or 4S.

Completing Activation on the CDMA Network

The following final activation steps are intended for CDMA iPhone 4 or 4S devices running any iOS.

After the phone has been added to your account:

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  2. Restart your phone
  3. Within 2-3 minutes the phone should start a Hands Free Activation on its own
  4. When the activation completes, your phone is ready for use

If your phone does not activate, try the steps below, in order, and test your services after each step.

Profile Update

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  2. Tap the phone app
  3. Dial # # 873283 #
  4. Tap Call
  5. Starting Service Update message will appear - tap OK
  6. If update is successful Service Update Complete message will appear after about a minute - tap OK

If the update is not successful or you get a "Service Update Failed" message, make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and try again.

If this doesn't help or you get voice/text services but not data, you may need to run a Factory Reset but first wait. Waiting 3-6 hours can sometimes give the phone sufficient time to connect to the network for the first time and activate on its own.

Factory Reset

If you've tried all of the steps above and your phone is still not activating, you'll need to run a factory reset.

Factory Reset

  1. Back up your phone
  2. Tap the Settings app
  3. Tap General
  4. Tap Reset
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  6. Enter your passcode if prompted
  7. Erase iPhone
  8. Erase iPhone

The phone will reboot and you will be prompted to set up your phone again, which you can do as a new device or restore it from a previous backup in iTunes or iCloud.

Picture Messaging Settings

The following steps will allow your phone to send and receive mms messages between your iPhone and other non-Apple devices

  1. Ensure that "Can send/receive pictures, videos and group messages" is enabled in the Device Settings in your Ting account
  2. Once mms messaging has been enabled on the account, wait 6 hours (if you've already had it enabled for more than 6 hours, move on to the next step)
  3. Restart your phone

If mms messaging still isn't working on your phone, run a profile update:

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Tap the phone app
  • Dial # # 873283 #
  • Tap Call
  • Starting Service Update message will appear - tap OK
  • If update is successful Service Update Complete message will appear after about a minute - tap OK

If mms messaging still isn't working on your phone, run a factory reset:

  • Back up your phone
  • Tap the Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Tap Reset
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  • Enter your passcode if prompted
  • Erase iPhone
  • Erase iPhone

Completing Activation on the GSM Network

 

Note : Visual voicemail, wifi calling and group messaging are only available for iOS devices that can update to iOS 10 or higher.

 

1. Reset APN to Default

Before beginning these directions, insert your activated Ting GSM X1 SIM card.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Tap Cellular Data Network. (If you don't see this setting, then the phone is not unlocked and you need to get in touch with your previous carrier.)
  4. Scroll down to Reset Settings and tap

2. Add Ting Data & MMS APN Settings

 

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Make sure that Wi-Fi is disabled.
  3. Tap Cellular.
  4. Make sure that 3G Data is enabled.
  5. Tap Cellular Data Network. If you don't see this setting, then the phone is not unlocked and you need to get in touch with your previous carrier.
  6. Under CELLULAR DATA:
    • Tap the APN field
    • Enter wholesale
    • Leave the Username and Password blank
  7. Under LTE SETUP (OPTIONAL):
    • Tap the APN field
    • Enter wholesale
    • Leave Username and Password blank
  8. Under MMS:
  9. Under PERSONAL HOTSPOT (OPTIONAL):
    • Tap the APN field
    • Enter wholesale
  10. Tap the back icon on the top left of the screen until you're back on the main Settings screen in order to save the APN settings.
  11. Press the Home button to exit to the main screen.
  12. Restart the phone.
  13. Check that you're able to browse the Internet in Safari and that you can send a picture/video/group message.
2. Add Ting Data & MMS APN Settings

 

 

MMS Messaging Support

Picture, video and group messaging (or mms messaging) will all work on iOS devices that are unable to update to iOS 10 on the GSM network, however it will be limited in the following ways:

  • Picture, video and group messaging cannot be enabled or disabled through the control panel. It is enabled by default.
  • MMS or group messaging settings may not show up on your device and can't be updated or changed.
  • Group MMS messages may be received as SMS messages.
  • Group messages sent to both Android and iOS devices will show up on as individual messages for all recipients and responses will come back in separate message threads.

    I'm really getting so fed up with your ting network, it would be so much easier just to pay a little more and not having to deal with all this bullshit!

    If you have any issues with the service then leave. You're not under contract nor obligated to use their services. Go with a mainstream carrier if you feel that setting your phone is "bullshit"
