GSM Android APN Settings

The following steps will help you get your GSM device up and running with Ting.

 

1. Reset APN to Default

Before beginning these directions, insert your activated Ting GSM X1 SIM card.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap the Connections tab if your device has a tab view; if not go to step 3
  3. Tap More networks (or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information)
  4. Mobile networks
  5. Access Point Names
  6. Tap the Menu + icon to add a new APN
  7. Tap Reset to default

2. Add Ting Data APN Settings

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap the Connections tab if your device has a tab view; if not go to step 3
  3. Tap More networks (or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information)
  4. Mobile or Cellular networks
  5. Access Point Names
  6. Tap the Menu + icon to add a new APN
  7. Enter APN settings
    • Name: Ting Data
    • APN: wholesale
    • APN type: If there is a free form field, enter the following exactly as written without spaces: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet,dun
      • If your device has a series of check boxes rather than a free form field, check all the boxes that correspond with the values listed above. For example: your device has checkboxes for default, mms, supl, wap and ia. Check only default, mms and supl.  
  8. If it's not set, enter 310 for MCC.
  9. If it's not set, enter 260 for MNC.
  10. For APN protocol, enter IPv6
  11. For APN roaming protocol, enter IPv6
  12. Tap the Menu key/icon
  13. Tap Save
  14. Select Ting Data as your APN
  15. Restart your device and wait for it to find the Ting network--this may take a minute or so
  16. Confirm that you're able to access data

If you experience issues with data, try resetting the APN protocol and APN roaming protocol (steps 10 and 11) to IPv4 and IPv6.

3. Add Ting MMS APN Settings

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap the Connections tab if your device has a tab view; if not go to step 3
  3. Tap More networks (or More, Wireless & networks, Wireless Controls, Wireless Manager, Phone Information)
  4. Mobile or Cellular networks
  5. Access Point Names
  6. Tap the Menu + icon to add a new APN
  7. Enter APN settings
    • Name: Ting MMS
    • APN: wholesale
    • APN type: Type in or select (if available): mms 
    • MMSC: http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
  8. If it's not set, enter 310 for MCC.
  9. If it's not set, enter 260 for MNC.
  10. For APN protocol, enter IPv4
  11. For APN roaming protocol, enter IPv4
  12. Tap the Menu key/icon
  13. Tap Save
  14. Select Ting Data as your APN - your phone will use the MMS APN settings automatically as it needs to.
  15. Restart your device and wait for it to find the Ting network--this may take a minute or so
  16. Confirm that you're able to send and receive picture, video and group messages.

**If you got to this page by way of a link in the activation process, go back to that browser tab and click "It worked" to see your phone number.**

    When I deleted the MCC and MNC values (steps 8 and 9), I was unable to save the profile. It said a 3 digit value is required for MCC.

    Isabel: are you sure about steps 8 and 9? I think you have to list the mobile network codes and country codes, which for the gsm network operator that cannot be named is MCC = 310 and MNC = 260. MVNOS use the codes of their parent. Those numbers also auto populate on a TMO branded phone with Ting Sim when you create a new APN

    I also deleted MCC and MNC values and was unable to save.  So I tried again and SKIPPED step 8 and 9. Everything is working fine so far.

    Concurring with the above thread. Android required the MCC, so I entered MCC = 310 and MNC = 260 per Peter's advice.

    I also could not continue with blank MCC and MNC values (Nexus 5).  I entered the values Peter listed and it seems to work (I was able to access data at least).

    I'm happy to say that my unlocked AT&T branded Samsung Tab 3 is working fine with these settings so long as I use 310 and 260 here in Austin.

    Glad it's working. The MCC and MNC are critical and always used together. The mobile country code id'S the country where the network is located. The U.S. Was assigned 310 to 316 by the UN, I think, 99% of the USA networks use 310 and few use 311. The next number is the mobile network code. There are hundreds of network numbers, but most are outdated due to mergers, takeovers, consolidations. You can find master lists of US MNCs on the web. It reads like the history of mobile growth with small operators being acquired by the big four.

    Bottom line, the codes are fixed for the particular network carrier and are not device dependent or location dependent within the USA. 310/260 is the code for the gsm network supplier to Ting

    I had the same problem on deleting the MCC and MNC values - numerical values are required on both a Nexus 5 and an HTC One M7. Confirmed the settings from what I wrote down and compared that to Peter's values. All is good at this point.

    Under my APNs tab LTE-Verizon Internet is displaying in gray and i am also unable to select the + button because it is grayed out

    My Amazon Fire phone has only an APN protocol(no roaming protocol) and it defaulted to IPv4 and it is not editable.  I have no idea what that means but I can send and receive phone calls and I have data connectivity that is too weak at my house to actually use.  It says I have 3 bars of 3G but I can't connect.  Does this beta test support 4G and/or will there be 4G connectivity in the official roll out?

    Susan, Erik: have you rebooted after you have a fully activated ting gsm Siim on a fully activated ting account? Generally, a grayed out APN means it's locked to a carrier. Same with an APN that is not editable. Roaming protocol is not important. The beta uses the full TMO lte 4g network at full speed. Sounds like a phone issue. The fire phone is an ATT phone, perhaps there are band issues. Did you run the IMEI ting checker? You may simply be in a crummy coverage area for TMO. I would contact ting CS by phone on Monday.

    I have an unlocked GSM fire phone that has never been activated on another carrier.  Is there a way to check the GSM beta coverage?

    Erik, you are posting in the wrong forum. You should look at the GSM Beta forum. Everything you need to know is in the threads dealing with gsm. I explained above, there is no special beta coverage, it's the bog standard coverage map used on the t mobile website.

    If anyone else had a problem finding the "Access Point Names" menu on their Nexus 5 or other CDMA/GSM phone, I had to enter *#*#4636#*#* on the dialer to bring up a hidden menu, Go to "Phone Information". Scroll down to "Set preferred network type:" to one that has "GSM" in it. I chose "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and it got switch to another that is probably more appropriate.

    The "Acces Point Names" menu should now be available.

    When I activated my HTC Inspire phone on the GSM Beta account, I experienced a problem. In the "APN Type", I was supposed to enter "default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet,dun". However, the moment I enter "fota", the "Menu->Save" button disappears and I cannot save the text. Even if I entered "fot", I was able to save the same! I could enter the entire string except "fota" and was able to save! I even inserted "Fota" between "admin" and "mms" and was able to save the settings.

    Customer support informed me on their chat that the case and order was important. Now this is a problem for me. I had just moved out of my AT&T subscription to Ting Beta...!!

    Undeterred, and along with the string "default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet,dun" now saved, I dialed into the cellphone from my landline.

    To my delight it worked!

    Next, I sent a text message to the support technician on her cellphone and sure enough, she received the same. And she responded by text which I received in my Messages. So incoming and outgoing text messages also worked.

    On the support technician's advise, I tested the data by searching on Google. And sure enough, I got the search results.

    I even dialed out to my landline from the cell and this worked as well. Meaning, incoming and outgoing calls are working.

    According to support, I have pretty much everything covered and am good to go.

    For the information of those having the old HTC Inspiron (2011 edition), if "fota" does not get saved, try "Fota". It has worked for me.

    The customer support has been just awesome, they really worked with me. I'm so glad to have made the switch!

    Correction. My saved APN type in the settings is"default,admin,Fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet,dun".

    Samsung SGH-I827 

    I have the Beta GSM email authorization and the SIM card I purchased from Ting. I followed the steps to set up a new APN and got through name (Ting), APN (wholesale), APN type (checkbox for internet/MMS), MMSC (  http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc), MCC (310), MNC (260). However, there is no menu item for either APN protocol, or APN roaming protocol. Without entering those, I pressed "Save", but the APN did not save.

    Any thoughts?  Thanks.

    Mark, is the phone fully activated on Ting? And did you do a reboot. APN not needed for voice or text. Often the APN is locked to the prior network until the phone is registered on the new (ting) network. I could not change APN for a day after activating. Do not worry about missing menu items.

    Yes, the phone is fully activated according to the status on Ting device page.  However, something new is that with this SIM card, when it boots up a screen comes up that says "Enter Network Lock Control Key", which it never did w/the ATT SIM card in it.   I've tried "Dismiss" to bypass it and I've also tried entering the "PUK Code" on the back of the Ting SIM card carrier (credit card type holder for Ting SIM card).  Neither worked.  So, I can't save the APN and it doesn't connect to the network either.  Thanks for any insight!

    Ting does not activate gsm phones, only the sim. I am far from an expert, but it appears your phone is still SIM locked to ATT. Did you get ATT to unlock the phone for you ? Only unlocked ATT phones will work on ting/gsm-T-Mobile. ATT should give you the code. Call ATT CS.

    PS. Mark, the reason why this never happened with a ATT sim, is because the phone is locked to ATT and was happy seeing an ATT sim. It does not recognize a non ATT sim and is asking for the code to unlock.

    Ah!  You nailed it!  I thought the thing was unlocked as it was a prepaid "GoPhone".....but apparently it was locked.  Unlock request has been submitted.  Thanks for your help!

    Super Mark. Neither ting nor any cellular company can tell if a phone is sim locked or unlocked. No magic checker like the IMEI checker for stolen or blacklisted. You got to do it the way you did, put in a sim and see what the phone does. Good luck.

    I've got a OnePlus One and when I put in the APN settings and hit "save", it doesn't show up... am I doing something wrong or do I need to change a setting?

    I could not get the device to save my apn with these settings (Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact).  I would hit save and nothing would appear in the list.  I ended up having to save with just the Name and APN set. Ting then showed in the list.  I went in to the saved item and filled in the rest of the information and saved it again. The item was still in the list.  I rebooted and have LTE signal and an active data connection.

    When I go back into view the APN settings, only the original two settings show, so I have no idea if I have the correct APNType etc and it's not visible, or if I'm running without it.

    But the data is fast and functional at the moment.

    I have a Moto 2nd gen which we ported over last night. Except for a small hiccup with the pin number, transfer was successful. Later, i attemped to set up data services - followed the instructions above to a "t" without luck. When I attempt to access internet via browser, I receive error code ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED. these fields are not populated: proxy, port, username, password, server, mms proxy, mms port, authentication type, mvno type, mvno value. bearer listed as unspecified. APN protocol and roaming protocal are set at ipv4/ipv6. I've called the help desk and have unable to resolve. they suggested i wait till the full rollout. anyone got any suggestions? thank you in advance for your thoughts and assistance

    These instructions need to be updated for Android 5.0, the menus in these instructions do not exist.
