FAQ: Ting Mobile App

Last updated by Isabel Matwawana

This article should answer most of your questions about the Ting App. Have a question that isn't answered below? Post it in the comments, and we'll get you one!

What can I do with the Ting app?

Lots! Check your current account usage in near real time, view all devices on your account, enable features for each device, and view your current monthly statements.

How do I get the Ting app?

Downloading and installing the app is easy!

Android app:  From your mobile device, simply launch the Google Play app, and search for "ting mobile". You can also find it directly using this Google Play link.

iOS app: From your mobile device, launch the iTunes app store and search for "ting mobile". You can also find it directly using this iTunes link.

How do I log in to the Ting app?

When you first access the app, you'll be asked to login which you can do with either your Ting account credentials or your Amazon login. If you're not the primary user of the account, you'll need to get those credentials from that person.

1. Will any usage from the app be counted toward my monthly bill?

That depends on whether you access the app while using data or Wi-Fi. If you use the app while you're on a data connection, then any data received by the app will be counted. However, since Wi-Fi usage is not counted toward your monthly usage, there are no additional usage charges to use the Ting app while connected to a Wi-Fi network.

2. Is the Ting app secure?

All data retrieved from the app is sent using a secured connection between the app and Ting's servers.

3. Which devices are supported?

We haven't tested with every device available, but Android phones running Gingerbread 2.3 or later and iOS devices using iOS 6.1 or later should be supported. If you have problems with your device and the app, let us know.

4. Is there a Windows version coming?

Currently there are no plans for a Ting app for Windows phones.

5. I don't have an Android or iOS device. What do I do?

There are no plans to release an app for non-smart phone devices. If you would like to check usage, or make changes to your account, you can log in at ting.com/account/login on any computer or device that supports web browsing anytime to manage your account.

6. Why is the app asking for access to my contacts?

The app uses your contacts to match phone numbers in your previous calls, with names. The app does not send your contacts to Ting, and the contact information details are not used for any other purpose.

7. Is the usage displayed by the app realtime?

Call usage is delayed by approximately 15-20 minutes. Calls made on roaming partners, or while traveling internationally could take longer to appear (in some cases, as much as 48 hours)

8. Where's the rest of my usage?

To keep mobile data usage down in the Ting app, it only presents the 20 most recent calls / text messages / data events. You can always see a full details of your usage in your Ting Dashboard.

9. Can I access device specific settings (such as change the device nickname)?

Yes. For more information on how to use the app, check out either the Android app or iOS app articles.

10. How do I change the frequency of the Ting app usage updates?

Tap the Menu key, choose Settings, tap Automatic Updates and select from the options presented. Choosing "Never" means you'll have to manually refresh to see new usage by tapping Menu then Refresh.

11. One of my devices is showing sideways. Is this normal?

In the Devices list, phones on your account appear vertically. Data devices appear horizontally.

12. When I choose "submit a request" I am prompted for a email address and password, is this my Ting username and password?

This is your Ting email and password, yes. For security reasons, we can't pass your email address and password across to the browser. As such, you must sign in again in order to access the Ting help and support site from the app.

13. Something isn't working right, what do I do?

If you experience any trouble while using the Ting app, please tell us. Be sure to include important details such as that type of phone you're using, Android or iOS version, and steps to reproduce the problem you're experiencing.

14. Where can I see the Ting app video?

You can check out the promo video on our YouTube channel or just click below to watch.

Useful basic info. Hopefully, as Ting service and the app matures we will have better access to more detailed info and services.

It would be nice to get this to work on Froyo.  Gingerbread and the Optimus S have video playback issues in Netflix so I am staying back with Froyo.

It does not seem to be updating. I check the website on my computer and it shows recent activity, the app only shows the activity from when I first launched it, yesterday.

Checked spam and checked trash just in case I accidentally deleted it. Nothing.

I'd rather not post either of our email addresses in a public forum. However, you send us a help request email. In the article above, under "Something isn't working right, what do I do?" there is a link to create a help request ticket. Can you please click the link for me? Thanks.

In Device Options, under the Minutes section, I have an "Allow International Calls" checkbox followed by a "Allow International Calls - North American Long Distance" setting.  What exactly is the difference between these two settings and do they function any differently when I'm in the US vs in a foreign country?

    Thanks.

  • Avatar

Hi Curtis, the difference is that "Allow International Calling" will allow you to make international calls anywhere in the world excluding North America and "Allow International Calling (North America)" will allow you to make calls to North America (ex. Canada, Mexico). This applies when you are making calls in the U.S.

However, if you plan on travelling outside the U.S., I would advise keeping both boxes checked.

Good app! I have a couple of enhancement requests:  first, iti would be nice if the rate schedule was available for viewing from  within the app.  Second, there should be an access mode where my kids can see how much they have used (and how it affects the total bill) but can't change billing address, phone options, etc.; perhaps they could sign on using their gmail account and the app would recognize that their phone is on the account but not the account owner?

Hey Eric, Thanks for the suggestions. We will take a look into what we might be able to do. Keep an eye out for any updates.

Good app!  It would be nice to have tabs on the top of the app (dashboard, devices, billing, alerts).  Also, right now if you choose one of the four sections they seem to open in a new "window" that is a little annoying.

Is the app compatible with the HTC Evo Shift? I attempted to download via Google Play & am getting the message "You're device isn't compatible with this version"

Hi Amie, the Ting app requires Android 2.3 and up.The HTC EVO Shift should be running Android 2.2, but you can also  check for Android system updates on your phone if you’re worried you’ve missed something.

I am very happy using the ting app, very useful and easy to make changes. My only problem is that i cant access the ting app offline. I dont use data on my mobile because of cost savings, only if i need a data connection for emergency i guess, so only wifi. I just would like to see my dashboard with the last updated info. I would not need to make any other changes on the app since it would not be updated till i go online. When i get on wifi i can make any other changes necessary. But i really just like to see the dashboard with last update offline. Thanks Ting for great service.

Thanks for the suggestion and feedback Vijendra. Since mobile information is so dynamic and usage accumulates by the minute, our app requires a data connection to pull up your account info to populate it with the current standing.

It's actually not possible for any smartphone/app to update info without a data connection, i.e. offline. Data is fuel for the internet car, without it, things stay static. Hope that helps.

I just wanted to add that the app works fine over wifi. I know that technically wifi isn't "offline" BUT it doesn't use data minutes and I noticed the app seems to update faster than the website.

One thing I think the app is missing is a security or PIN code to activate. I'm not talking login password but just something so that if someone picks up my phone and clicks the Ting app they cannot go straight into my account.

Presently I have an app lock on it but this is the kind of thing that really should have it's own PIN code.

Hi Siguie, this may be something that we can add to a future update, but for now I recommend adding a lock/password to the phone itself. This can usually be done in the Security settings on Android phones. Thanks for the feedback!

Just activated my old HTC Evo Shift, and tried to d/l the app from the Play store, but it says it is not compatible with my device. It's fully up to date (as it can be), Android 2.3.4.

Hi. Love the app. It would be nice if it displayed our custom referral link somewhere, so we can easily refer others to Ting. Maybe even as a QRcode? Thanks.

Brennan and Vijendra, I have a related comment.  I understand the app does need a data connection and that makes sense.  However, I turned data off on my smartphone using the Ting app and then wanted to re-enable it.  Because the app won't even remain open without data, I was forced to wait until I was in a wifi area so I could re-enable data.  On a lengthy 2 hour commute, this meant swinging into a parking lot of a fast food chain to complete the task.

Requiring a data connection to enable a data connection is a programming catch 22 that I believe should be addressed.  Other than this, I really like the app and the features/information it offers.  Thanks!

    Hi Dylan,

The ability to re-enable data on your Ting account will have to be performed:

    • through a Wi-Fi connection
    • through your online Ting account (via another medium with data)
    • by calling Ting Support so we can enable it for you

I completely get what you're saying....and it is exactly that, a programming catch 22. There is no way to re-activate data on the device in question, without having data on the device already.

Is there any chance that the Android app will be updated to support devices running Android 4.x? I tried sideloading it onto my  Nexus 5 but login authentication failed repeatedly.

Now that iPhone is supported, is there an iOS client in the works?

  • Avatar

Indeed there is, however it will only be released once official support is announced for the device. At the moment we are still in Beta.

Calum, the App should be able to run with no issue on phones that run that OS. If you continue to have issues with it just get in touch with support.

Would be a nice addition to the app to be be able to send/share referral links from the app through e-mail, sms, social network, etc.
