Refer-A-Friend (I referred a friend to Ting)

If you've been talking up Ting to your friends, family or even strangers on your commute to work thank you!! We really, really appreciate it. We want to make sure you get the credit you're due for that, so here are some helpful hints for making sure you get what's coming to you (in the best possible way).

How do I refer a friend?

After you've told your friend about how much you're loving Ting, the next step is to give them your referral link.

What is a referral link?

A referral link is a special link that, when used, automatically applies a credit to your account as well as a discount to the purchase of a new device OR a credit to the new account of the person you referred to Ting.

Where do I find my referral link?

To find your specific referral link click Refer your friends on the side bar.

Where do I find my referral link?

What should my friend do with the referral link?

Tell your friend to use this special link to come to the site, rather than coming directly to ting.com. This link will bring your friend to the site, automatically apply their credit and they'll see a banner at the top of the page confirming that.

How does the referral link work?

When your referral link is used, the system automatically applies a discount of $25 to the purchase of your friend's new device or $25 in credit to their new account if they purchase a used/refurbished device or bring their own. Once your friend activates their device, you will get a $50 credit if it's your first referral and a $25 credit for any referrals after that.

How do I give my referral credit to a charity?

On your Referrals page in your account, click on the Donate your credit to charity link. This will open a pop up box that allows you to select from one of six eligible charities to donate your credit to.

At the end of each month we’ll give a full list of donors to every participating charity. You’ll then receive a confirmation from them via email that they’ve received your donation. Please allow time at the end of each month for the charity to send this email. As this is out of our control, we cannot guarantee the exact time you’ll receive email confirmation.

How do I give my referral credit to a charity?

Can I refer a friend who already has devices with Ting?

No. Referrals only apply to the first device on any account and only for new accounts.

My friend just signed up and forgot to use my referral link. What do I do?

We can help with that. Have your friend get in touch with us and let us know. They'll need to have your referral link handy or at least the email address that you use with Ting and be able to verify access to their account.

Just a note, your first referral gets you $50 in credit as long as your referral link was used successfully. Credits applied manually--because the link wasn't used properly--net you a $25 credit, even if it's your first referral. However, the next person you refer who uses the link successfully will get you that $50 credit. So make sure to remind your friends to use your link!

i see referral links posted on ebay as false listings... they even say "nothing to buy here, just click this link and get $25 service credit."  I know this type of listing is against eBay's listing policies, but, what is Ting's policy on such things?  Do you notice some members are "power referers?"  Are you just glad to have new customers, or do you impose limits, or what?

Hey Anthony, While we aren't fans of these users disobeying eBay's policies, we aren't against "power referrers" and will not refuse the credit to the new users who come to Ting from these links.

I just referred my brother and he said he was credited $25 when he signed up, but I do not see record of the referral on my account nor do I see a $50 credit.  When should I expect to see the credit?

Hi Jim, thanks for writing in. The referral credits should be applied to your account as soon as your brother activates their device and has had a bill debited from their credit card. We're going to contact you by email in order to get more details about your referral and further investigate that for you. Watch for an email from us within the next few minutes.

I too am having the same problem that Jim is having - but I know for a fact my brother hasn't been billed yet. Do I have to wait until next month when that is billed for him, because it won't apply to my next bill at that point.

Hey Allison, yes you will have to wait a little longer. Your credit will be applied once he has run out of credits and has a charge on his credit card.

I referred a friend and he was recently billed. Will I see a credit on my bill soon?

    Hi Jay,

If your friend's credit card was billed on this cycle, then once that charge hits his card, you'll see your credit. If he still has credit left then it'll be a bit longer--once he runs out of credit and we bill his card for the first time.

Okay, my friend has been billed and the charge has been paid by his card yet I still don't see the credit. Is there something I need to do?

I see that you have sent in a help request, I will be responding to it shortly. Keep an eye out for an email!

You need a placeholder notice that the end user will get their $50 when Ting gets paid, many of us are doing "inner circle" referrals where friends and family members as well as the referring person want to make sure it worked.

I am having the same issue.   I have a friend that has already paid their first bill but I still show no credit.  The last credits I received I had to email about.  Is there something causing the referrals not to work?   It seems odd that the last three three haven't come through without intervention.

Hey there Debbi, I would be happy to look into that for you. I will send you an email and we can investigate for you.

Hi Franklin.  Referrals only work when you are referring new customers (i.e. new accounts).

Placing someone on your account doesn't result in referral credits, though under your account it would allow you to pool your usage together (mins, text, data). This could end up saving you more money long term versus the referral credits.

I contacted Ting awhile ago about not receiving a referral credit (I referred my brother).  They said that they didn't have any record of my code being used, even though I know it was.  I was told to have him contact Ting.  He called today and was told that I wouldn't be receiving a credit.  This is turning into a pain in the butt to receive my credit!  Please help.

Hey Joseph. I located your support request and will be replying to that.

I believe your brother might have forgotten to use the code or not used it when he bought or activated the phone - that's when the code gets applied. We can process the credits retroactively for any active account, so we should be able to do it if his account is still up and running and he contacts with that code. Watch for an email from us in a few minutes so we can sort that out.

Hi Maria!  I see you've opened a support request, so I'm going to connect with you there.  Having the holder of the new account get in touch with us is the best way to track down credits.

I think the refer thing is a little misleading (  Refer a friend, get a $50 credit and pay $0 this month!) the way this makes it sound is when they activate there device we both get the credit right away making my bill 0.00 this month, not in 1 or 2  months when they spend over their own credit. we have no control on how people use there phones

    Joshua,

I have gotten the credit immediately after the friend has met the requirements. If they bought a phone from Ting, it was almost immediate.

Do credits rollover to the next month if your monthly bill is lower than your credit balance?

  • Avatar

    Hey Kevin,

As long as there is remaining credit after a bill has closed it will roll onto the next billing cycle to discount that bill.

    I hope this helps!

Hi, my sister used my referral link last night to buy a phone for both her & her hubby. From my understanding, I should have received an email that my link was used, and then I'd receive an email when the credit is applied. Since they bought their phones through Ting, I was thinking I would have received the email and credit right away. Am I jumping the gun? It's my first referral, so I just want to make sure I get the credit, but I want to give you enough time to process it, too. :) I was thinking I'd at least have gotten the referral notification via email by now. Just checking.... ;)

    Hey Sara,

If you haven't received an email, you can c ontact us via a support request and we'll look into any account credits you have. As such, you can also get the new customer to contact us, and we can ensure they used the referral correctly. If not, we can adjust from their account, which will also reflect on yours  :)

Hello, I recently referred a friend and got a $50 credit on my bill (almost instantly). He got a $100 credit on his acct (almost instantly). However when I sent a second friend a referral code she told me it wouldn't do anything and she had to activate her phones without being able to use the referral. Are we only allowed 1 referral within a certain time period? Please help. I would like to get the credit for it but I'd especially like her to get the $100 for it. Thanks!

I believe if a used phone is purchased or a device is BYOD, the Ting credit is only for service, not the initial device purchase. You or your friend should be able to call Ting support to get the proper credit added. Your friend would need your referral URL before calling.
