Transfer from T-Mobile to Ting
Answered

I just thought I'd leave a short note of thanks and encouragement to those who are considering switching to Ting from one of the Big Three carriers.  I have a LG G4, on GSM that I using on T-Mobile.  With some trepidation about the transfer process (the long article about how to change settings was a tad daunting), I still went ahead, ordered a new SIM card, and took a deep breath to begin the switch.

My phone was paid off (on T-M's installment plan) and the phone unlocked using the T-M app.  The PIN used to transfer my exisiting number was simply the last four digits of my SSN (confirmed by phone with T-M's rep; the information on carrier porting could be updated--one doesn't need to call T-Mobile.) One simply fills in the T-M account number and PIN, and clicks on through.

The new Ting SIM card was activated virtually instantly, and I got an email stating that the number was ported within 3 minutes--not the 24-72 hours I expected.  Very pleasantly surprised!  Then Ting sent me a text that had a link that updated my data and text settings; I rebooted the phone and was back in business.  The whole process took less than 15 minutes, and required no fiddling with my LG G4's settings (it's running Android 6.0) and I sent and received a couple of texts to friends to test things; it was seamless.

These forums tend to be dominated by postings that describe glitches, problems, frustrations.  I just thought I'd post a note of kudos to Ting for making this process, at least for me, quite painless, even pleasant.

  • I noticed tat a few years ago. I think it took about 5 minutes for the network changes for MMS, though.

I was told that T-Mobile basically does the number port immediately when the request is made. Some other carriers seem to delay the number porting.

My worst porting experience was porting my Verizon landline to Ting CDMA. That number port took a full week.

  • Thanks for posting! I'm thinking of making the switch for my family from T-Mobile as well and glad to know it went smoothly for you.

  • Thanks for this.  I was able to activate and port my number without calling T-Mobile.  Activation and porting my number took about 3 minutes. :)
