Moto G Play - Trouble sending/receiving Group Texts(mms) over WIFI
Answered

I have been using an HTC phone for a while and I can send group texts(mms) over data and WIFI.  I recently added a Moto G Play for my son and it will send/receive mms messages just fine over the data connection, but it will note send/receive over WIFI.  How can I fix this?

  • Hey Bill.

All MMS messaging requires a mobile data connection in order to send/receive the messages. One thing we do suggest if you prefer to save money on data costs if downloading a 3rd party app (Textra) to send/receive MMS messaging over WiFi rather than just a mobile data connection.

  • I tried Textra and it did not work.  It works fine over the mobile data, but not WiFi.  The phone keeps giving a notification that a mobile data connection is needs to send MMS messages.

  • Did you go into the Textra settings under MMS and enable Prefer WiFi?

  • Is the Moto G Play on Ting CDMA or Ting GSM? I recall someone saying they had issues with MMS over WiFi on GSM, Textra does MMS over WIFI on CDMA very well.

  • The Moto G Play is on Ting GSM.  We have an HTC phone and BLU phone that have no problems with mms over WiFi on TING GSM.  If that is the problem, then should I switch this phone to CDMA?  When I entered the MEID or IMEI to activate the phone, I was given the choice between GSM and CDMA.  Should I change it?

  • Hey Bill,

It is definitely an option to try out CDMA instead of GSM. Keep in mind, if you swap to CDMA and prefer GSM, you will need to activate on a new GSM SIM card. (Our GSM SIM cards can only be activated once).

  • I would like to try CDMA.  Can I just go through the add device on my account to switch it to CDMA or should i call to get help with that.

  • As long as you have the correct CDMA SIM for the device - https://ting.com/shop/SIM-B4 - you can follow the activation flow online on your Ting account. Of course, you can call us or pen a live chat with us if you need any assistance with it.

  • I switched it over to CDMA today and everything is working great including the group texting.  Thanks!

  • Now we have another problem.  If someone with an iPhone sends a groups text, it will not download over WiFi.  It will download using the mobile data. Is there way to fix that?

  • Hey Bill,

MMS by default are not designed to work over Wifi on any phone, but often times the phone will detect an MMS and will switch over to the data network on it's own. On some phones this works great on it's own, and others the switching seems to be broken.

An App like Textra will often times fix this issue, but since it hasn't in your case I would try touching base with the phone manufacture to see if they have a fix for the issue in place/a patch you can download to correct the behavior.

If they don't have one presently, you'll need to switch over to the data network anytime an MMS is coming in from an iPhone manually.
