Samsung Galaxy S7 Active unable to send MMS messages
Answered

I brought a Samsung Galaxy S7 Active device over from AT&T, but it appears that I'm not able to send MMS messages.  Texting works as far as I can tell, but I also get a text from 94183571 every time I start the phone saying "Sorry, this service is not available."  I'm thinking the two things are related.

I believe I have all of the APN settings correct because it looks like everything else on the phone works as intended.  However, resetting the phone to defaults on the Access Point Names screen doesn't clear out everything as I would expect it to.  There are 9 non-Ting settings that persist after I reset to default, including a T-Mobile IMS apn.  I think this might be because the Galaxy S7 Active is exclusive to AT&T unless you unlock it.  I have also attempted everything on the https://help.ting.com/hc/en-us/articles/205421078-Troubleshooting-GSM-Picture-Video-MMS-Messaging page multiple times.

  • Turns out it was the default Messaging app. Seems like the MMS service the Messaging app was using was hard-coded to only use AT&T's messaging service. Probably because the phone was only released to one carrier.

Using a different app to send MMS messages (I'm now using Google Hangouts) sends the messages out just fine. Just wanted to post this here in case anyone else has this same issue with the Galaxy S7 Active.

  • This worked for me on a Samsung Galaxy S6 as well, in case that is helpful to anyone else. Using the default app didn't work, but a 3rd party app gets it done.

  • I was getting 3 of the exact same text messages on my S7 when I first powered on.  2 messages stopped when I replaced the default messaging app.  The last message stopped when I disabled the stock Visual Voicemail app.  This phone was also AT&T.  30 text messages later and it is fixed.  Hope that saves some else a few messages.

  • Oddly enough there was roughly 3 inch antenna that was connected to a storm drain. While I was examining it I got a text with the same message from that same number. I had never received a text from that number before. My phone is a Samsung S6 and was originally AT&T.
