No group messaging, no photos, and insane data
Answered

I've accrued 50 MB on data today while connected to my home wifi. I'd hate to see how much data I use during a typical day without wifi for half of the day. I've only been with Ting for 2 days and I'm starting to think transferring over was a mistake. Ting is likely best for people who rarely use their phone. My other issue is, I can no longer send group messages or photos. What a drag.

Yes, I already completed the steps provided within another post (e.g., enter "wholesale").

  • Hey Dana,

Since you're using iPhones you're going to want to check and see if this feature is enabled or not:

    https://ting.com/blog/ting-tip-disable-wi-fi-assist-in-ios-9/

Apple pushed this out without fully testing it and it doesn't work the way it's supposed to, it will actually drop you off of your WIfi network and connect to the cellular network and use data through that because it thinks your Wifi connection isn't that good. That could be the cause of your Data usage while connected to Wifi.

And for your MMS settings, while I'm sure you've gone through this a couple of times, have a look at this guide again:

    https://help.ting.com/hc/en-us/articles/205428708-GSM-iOS-APN-Settings

Start from scratch and when checking what you have, make sure you don't skip over the MMSC URL, as that's often what happens, people forget to add it or they've entered it with mistakes, and it will prevent your services from working correctly.

If that's all in place as it should be, you can try the following:

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings (this will clear out your existing APN's as well as the Wifi passwords)

Once the reset has done, add the APN's back in and test again to see if you can use group/picture messages now.

On the GSM network the APN settings are the only thing that affect your ability to use those settings outside of data being disabled on your account, which it's not at present.

Also, any time you receive an update to your phone from Apple it will remove the APN's in place, so you will have to enter them again down the line.

Let me know how you make out.

  • Hi Brad,

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I've tried all of that already. Not sure what other options I have to enable these features on my iPhone.. I did transfer from AT&T - not sure if that matters or not? :(

  • Hey there,

Sorry for the delay. I am still unable to send group text messages or images to anyone other than my daughter using iMessages. When I try to send a photo to my dad, I get the error message (attaching for your reference). When I attempt to send group text messages, the replies are all individual, not in group format. I'm not even sure it's working, to be honest. I get replies, but the user on the other end doesn't see it as a group message and the reply back to me isn't a group message.

After some consideration, I've decided to switch over to T-Mobile. Long-term, Ting is far more costly for someone like myself and the inability to send photos/group messages (which, seems to be a common complaint), is a deal breaker for me. Prior to switching to Ting, I sent both for 8+ years without difficulty. To be fair, I literally checked and double checked all of the tips provided here on your website (and elsewhere) in an attempt to resolve this issue, but have had no luck.

Re: cost - Ting is far more expensive than any other plan. The only way to avoid a bill that is in excess of my previous bill (at ATT) would be to completely turn off one or more communication technologies (phone, data, or text), and this isn't an option for me.

On a totally positive note, the switch from ATT was really simple and Ting has the best customer service by far. If only all companies had the same level of customer service! Thank you for everything and best of luck. :)

Btw: Please don't close my account because I'm waiting on my new SIM cards. It will be a couple of days and I think I can handle it.

    Sincerely,
    Dana

    Thank you,
    Dana :)
