TING push Sprint for FM Chip Activation
Not planned

Dear TING - we know Sprint is refusing to allow TING to active the FM receiver chip on most modern smartphones claiming it is a premium feature for their direct customers. But we (the end-customers) paid for the phones we use, like my new unlocked S7 with this hardware functionality. The update is only flipping the switch so to speak and requires no network services to operate, in fact this is why we need this. It is imperative to have an FM receiver available in cases of natural and human disasters and to purposely disallow this functionality is showing a complete lack of conscience. We need you to take action and push for this life-saving feature.

To those who say - just buy a cheap FM radio I say - yes - I have one in my go-bag. But be honest, is you emergency kit with you everywhere you go? Is your smartphone with you everywhere you go? Enough said.

  • Hi Jamie - I have done considerable research and no third party app can work until the FM chip itself is activated by the carrier OTA update.

  • Follow-up. A detailed BLOG post showing that TING cares and what steps you will take would be a great place to start.

  • Hey Michael.

This is definitely something that I can again bring up in our next feature request meeting as it has been brought up before. You are correct, it's entirely up to our network partners to allow us access to the FM radio chip for the device. Temporarily, there are a few 3rd party apps that you would be able to use that allow access to radio.

  • I am with you Michael.  Ting has to request T-Mobile to activate the radio chip.  No third-party app to specifically activate the FM radio chip. I am a computer novice, so don't no if the deep-web would have such a software hack.

Thanks for sharing your +1's Michael and Brian.
