I know that several months ago we were told that only devices that can accept a physical SIM Ting card can be activated on Ting -- but are there any plans in the works to develop an accommodation to the eSIM? Thanks!

Hey Arlene, Ting is certainly interested in the benefits and ease of use that come with the eSIM. I can tell you that we are very interested in bringing the eSIM to Ting and are in constant talk with our SIM vendors and carrier partners to ensure we are positioned correctly for when these are available for MVNOs.

Are there any updates on this? My Pixel 2 should be arriving soon and I'd be very interested in using this!
No updates on this at the moment. For now, the Pixel 2 would still need to use a Ting SIM card to connect to the network.
So here we are, 18 months later. Samsung is coming out with a splendid new watch, and I really, really want it. I also really, really want to be able to activate it with my favorite mobile carrier, Ting. Please, oh please, tell me that there is some progress on eSIM compatibility. (Kinda' whiny, I know. The hour is late and the day has been long.)

I wish I had better news for you, Arlene. We still haven't gotten the green light from all companies involved, and until we do, there's going to be no movement on eSIM. We already have the systems in place to turn it on the moment we get the go-ahead.
This is unrelated to the DoJ inquiry, but it doesn't help.

I saw you posted in our other thread about this, so I just wanted to copy/paste my response to make sure you saw it, and to close the feedback loop on this thread as well:
We're in a holding pattern on eSIM with no news to report. The entities I referred to earlier have still not given their approval. Until they do, we cannot provide eSIM services.
But we're in the same boat as every other MVNO, though. Until the keyholders give their thumbs up, we can run tests on eSIM (like we have with another Tucows brand, AOW) but cannot offer it to Ting customers.
Our fearless leader notes on the blog the importance of eSIM to Ting customers, and to the industry as a whole. We absolutely hear you and absolutely want to get this to you guys ASAP.
The Pixel 3 does still have a physical SIM slot. It's at the bottom, near the USB-C port. You will still be able to use the Pixel 3 on Ting with either our GSM or CDMA SIMs. We're just waiting to hear back on which CDMA SIM card it uses.
I would love to be able to have dual sim and/or esim available on an iPhone so that I can separate personal and business use for tax purposes. It would be so much easier than going through my bill to see what was personal and business or carrying around 2 phones. It's something that we want too. There are just a couple of issues that we are currently working out with our network partners before we can activate eSIMs with Ting services. We're getting there though and hope to have an announcement sooner rather than later.
I'm not surprised Ting has had a hard time getting eSIMs to work. We bought 2 Samsung watches when eSIMs first came out, and neither has ever had functioning cellular service.
We bought TMobile version hoping to use with both Ting and Project Fi (personal & work).
Finally a year ago, tried to get them connected with a TMobile plan. You can't get a watch plan if you don't have a phone with them, so we got a phone plan for 1 watch. After 4 months, they still didn't have it working. They refunded everything but taxes and fees.
TL;DR. Basically, if a primary carrier can't get eSIM working, there's basically no hope for MVNOs like Ting.
This was over a year ago and I know TMobile has it working for phones that you get from them, but there's still problems with BYOD.
I do thank Ting for keeping us up-to-date on this instead of ignoring the thread.
We'll keep updating any time we have news, RJ. Our blog will probably be the first place we post news but we'll be coming back to this thread too the moment we have something.

No update yet. Since the last time we've posted some things have changed with our network partners and we've added a third option as well. What we are working towards is eSIM activation across all our network options and this has had some road bumps along the way.
eSIM is something that we believe will be a huge benefit for our customers so we continue to work towards it. Currently no set time for launch but I don't think it will be this year as there are still many things to get done before we can offer it. When we are closer to offering it we will definitely be letting everyone know still. Thanks for your patience and we all appreciate your desire to use eSIM.
Why not rollit out where you can. I just received my Pixel 4a. Use a sim for my data @ $4.17 a month . Use Ting for cell. Gonna have to switch to Fi. Gonna give it a month, as my bill was paid 1 day before my phone arrived. Will keep an eye out.
Believe me, if we could just say "yeah, we support it but only on XYZ", then we absolutely would. The roadblocks are bigger than that.
For reference, Tucows' market cap is (as of Aug 19, 2020), $684 Million. Impressive, but nowhere near Google's $1.05 Trillion. If we had the resources that Google does for Fi, we could absolutely just make it happen.
Please do report back on your experiences with Fi -- I'd love to hear them. I have an unactivated SIM from them from a few years ago and could just never make the jump based on the reports from /r/GoogleFi.
