Not seeing any savings with Ting in first month of service

At the end of a month of service my bill is $45, whereas my previous carrier was $37.50 flat rate for unlimited voice, text and 2.5 GB of internet. I did have to use much more voice and text than usual because I am looking for a new place to live. Also, the data connection kept auto-updating apps before I realized how much bandwidth it was using. Then the wifi would auto activate and run down the battery. So it's my fault.

It's all about managing use. I seldom talk more than 500 mins/mo or text at all. I could connect to wifi to make voip calls and do other web business to keep the bill down to $25/mo. All in all I am happy with Ting, especially because of their CSRs.

  • If you are using Ting GSM, connecting to Wi-Fi to make VoIP calls will still use minutes because the calls still need to traverse the Ting partner's network.

Ting only charges minutes when their partner charges them.

The nice thing about Ting is you were able to use the phone more than usual without upgrading to a higher monthly plan. Your bill will automatically go down after you resume your normal usage.

  • If you use an app like Hangouts (and some other apps) to make calls over WiFi then Ting doesn't charge for them, even on Ting GSM:

Kelly - sounds like when you go back to your normal usage you'll be saving some money. Using WiFi instead of data definitely helps, especially for app updates.

  • I'm using CDMA. I saw a tweet from Ting a few days ago that said calls made using Google Hangouts were free. So if I'm connected to a wifi hotspot there should be no phone network usage. Correct?

  • Update: my monthly bill is now on target for $24.00. This includes 1) Device fee of $6.00 2) 446 voice minutes @ $9.00 3) 59 SMS texts @ $3 4) 46 MB of data @ $3 and; $6 in Universal Carrier Fund charges (tax).

I am the sort of customer Ting is meant for - I don't need to be yammering on the phone or texting all the time. I can get away with no data usage because I have free internet from my landlord. I seldom text anyone and could probably use less than 100 mins of voice in any given month.

I could easily get my bill down to $12 if careful. This is 'Pay for Usage' and I love it. Thank you, Ting!

  • Oops, forgot to mention that Ting customer service extended me a $3 credit (if you're doing the math) for an error I made in not turning off the auto update function on my phone.

  • Thanks, I like Ting. They don't have any fancy marketing gimmicks. And customer service is great. I think I'll stay.
