Hi. Wondering if the new Essential phone will work on Ting? or how to find out... (it is currently on pre-order).

  • Hey Elleen, based on the specs it looks like it should be compatible with Ting. Once it's for sale you can check out the IMEI on our compatibility tool to be sure.

  • Does the announcement of Essential teaming up with Sprint give more credibility that the new phone will work with Ting?

  • Hey Felix, the Sprint partnership looks promising especially because this seems different than the usual exclusives they do. In this case, it seems like Essential will still be selling an unlocked version on their site. Check out this article for some more details. So as long as you don't buy the phone under a Sprint contract it should be good to go on Ting.

  • Current Ting user on Nexus 5.  Will be getting the Essential Phone this Sept. 1. Will try to set it up if it is compatible.

  • Michael,

It should! From everything we've seen, the phone should be good on launch day to work on our GSM network. Provided you don't buy the phone from Sprint on contract, you should also be good to use it on CDMA, provided it passes the compatibility checker at ting.com/byod

  • Do I need to get a new Ting sim card for the Essential Phone or can I use the sim from my nexus 5 which currently runs CDMA?

  • You'll probably need a new SIM card.

If you want to activate the Essential Phone on GSM, you'll need the GSM X1 SIM.

If you want to activate the Essential Phone on CDMA, you'll need the Ting Nano Sim C7, also known as SIMGLW416Q. The SIMOLW416Q will work, too.

Get in touch with us at help@ting.com and we can hook you up with the SIM you need, Michael.

  • I just got my Essential Phone.  Showed up a day early. (Yeah!)  When I entered the IMEI into the compatibility checker at ting.com/byod, I got a message saying:

"This is the first time we have encountered this device. Our team will review the submission as soon as possible, and determine if it is Ting compatible. Please try again in 1 business day."

Let's hope tomorrow it'll be Ting compatible.

Also, did you get this Essential Phone from Sprint? Best Buy? Directly from Essential?

  • How long will it take to get a new sim delivered? My new essential phone should be tomorrow and I will be traveling starting Sept. 11

  • Standard shipping time is typically 5 days or so. You can pay for expedited shipping (2-3 days), or if you're trying to get a GSM SIM, you can get it from Amazon or Walmart.com.

  • I have a new Essential phone and it's not compatible with the Ting network. Maybe Sprint won't allow it from third party carriers like Ting?

  • Hey Jason,

The Essential phone should be completely compatible with both networks. What's the error message you get when you run the phone through ting.com/byod ?

  • Hi Mitch,

Thank you for the response.  The message is simply:

Sorry, this phone is not compatible with Ting.

I hope Ting can get this resolved as I'd rather not move to another carrier. Please let me know if you need more information.

  • That's really strange. I'll take a look. Send an email to help@ting.com with the IMEI of the Essential Phone and post here when you've sent the email so I can snag it and help you out.

  • The Essential phone is widely reported as having signal strength issues when on T-Mobile LTE bands, see the comments on Amazon and reddit. Reportedly a hardware issue in the phone's antennas.

Since Ting is a MVNO for T-Mobile has anyone experienced problems using the Essential phone with Ting? I want to buy an Essential phone but I don't want to leave Ting.

  • Your experience on Ting GSM would mirror the experience on T-Mobile. That said, we have several Essential PH-1's active on Ting without issues.

I've been following the antenna issues you're describing, and it all boils down to how strong the signal actually is where you are. There's a good chance you could get an Essential and not have any signal problems.
