Please add me to the list of customers requesting parental controls

Hi, I've been a Ting customer for a number of years now, and have recently purchased a third SIM card for use on my 11-year-old's new Moto Play. We've used Ting for our kids' phones but would really appreciate having parental controls, particularly time-of-day limitations. We love Ting -- its a great service at a very reasonable price. We hope you'll consider adding more features for parental controls.

  • Hey Sheila, thanks for reaching out! As of right now, we have parental controls on the back burner. We want to give you as much control over your account as possible in order to make your Ting experience the best. To do this we are constantly working with our network partners but as of right now having real-time usage limits is not feasible because all recorded usage comes back to us at a delayed rate. We will continue to keep bringing up parental controls as a topic at our feature request meetings. For the time being, I recommend utilizing the usage caps we already have in place in conjunction with a third party device like Circle in order to control home usage.

  • I am with Sheila. I am a Ting customer, and I am very happy. I would love to see parental controls added as an option. We are looking to start getting our kids their own phones. Thanks!

  • Please add me as another satisfied Ting customer whose children do not yet have cell phones and who would like to see parental controls added as an option before we would consider putting them on the Ting network.

  • I am the previously commenter, and I see the recommendation for Circle, but as pointed out in the message, Circle only helps with home usage.

  • Sarah,

You can disable data on any line on your Ting account right from the Ting app, if you'd like to micro-manage your kids' data usage. Keeping it off unless you specifically turn it on is a great way to control their usage until we're able to provide something like parental controls.

  • Thank you for your reply, Mitch!

Yes, I do like Ting's usage controls, and they may be enough to get us started, but parental controls that would allow us to set a regular time to disable usage so that we wouldn't have to manually do it every night would be great.

  • You're not alone! This is something we hear about pretty regularly, and have for the past few years. The issues come in with our network partners reporting and toggling of the service codes as frequently as the parental controls would require. They're not designed to be flipped several times per day per account, as doing so might cause one of them not to get flipped.

This snowballs to an increased number of help request tickets to help@ting.com from parents who, by all accounts, have disabled features on their lines, but have not had those features turned off.

Keeping the control in your hands by manually requiring you to toggle helps keep this a non-issue, but we're still trying to cook up a way that parental controls could work.

  • I'm sure this has come up, but wouldn't a simple way to do this be to expand the usage caps section of settings with time based "if" sections rather than usage?

  • I have been with Ting for several years and am a highly satisfied user.  Thank you for providing such great service at a reasonable price for my family.

One question... can I use my Ting App to shut off my kids' data occasionally (as a punishment... ha ha) and turn it back on a day or a week later?  I've been able to turn it off by setting alerts/caps at their current usage, but haven't been able to turn them back on in the same way by raising the alerts/caps.  Am I doing something wrong?  Please advise.  Thank you!

  • Hi Chrystal,

You can do this in the Device Settings section of your Ting My Account. You'll need to click on your childs line and then you will be able to turn off or on any feature (talk, text or data) that you like. Just remember to hit save after you have turned the feature on or off in the app so that the system picks it up.
