Mobile calls and usage

I am a week into using Ting as my provider, and am frustrated that callers are not hearing a clear conversation, even though I am in a strong wireless area (especially my home).  I used Verizon for years without any issues; now I am concerned that I made the right decision.  I am also trying my best to use little cellular coverage, and have watched and applied what I've learned on the tutorials.  And yet my billing continues to rise.  My billing cycle ends in 19 days; at this rate I'm afraid I'll be nearing what I paid Verizon with unlimited coverage.
