Can't change APN settings on iphone after carrier update

Hoping someone could help me.  After the latest carrier update, I see that visual voicemail is now available, but not I'm not able to set up the APN settings on my iphone 5 or my wifes iphone 6.  Both of our phones are unlocked phones purchased direct from Apple.  iOS version is showing as 10.3.1 (14E304) and Carrier is showing as "Ting 28.4".  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Justin!

You don't have to update APN settings anymore :) Along with VVM and Wifi calling, auto-APNs are part of the carrier bundle update that came with Ting 28.4.

If your data isn't working, it's likely an issue we're working on. If you want to log into your Ting.com account and turn on tethering, that should do it. Can you send us a quick email help@ting.com to let me know that you've done that and if it works or not?

    Thanks!

  • I experienced this issue as well on my iPhone SE. After updating my phone to iOS 10.3.1, I lost the ability to use data, and the option to edit APN settings is no longer available.

I followed Ariel's suggestion to enable Tethering on my Ting.com account, and it seems like this fixed the issue! I can use data on my phone again. Thanks Ariel!

For reference, the account setting looks like this:

  • Hi Brian!

I'm glad to hear that worked for you. If you've got 5 mins to spare, can you also send an email to help@ting.com so we can add you to the list. Once we get a fix for the tethering-needing-to-be-on-to-use-data issue, we will let everyone know :)

    Thanks so much!

  • Currently having the same issue with the IOS 10.3.3 update on my iPhone SE. However tethering was already enabled for my device yet cellular is still not working and I am not able to access the APN settings, unsure of how to proceed. Not sure if I need to update to this "Ting 28.4" version or not, in Carrier mine still says just "Ting" and not "Ting 28.4". Is there another step I should take?

  • Hi David,

With the update, the settings should have been set up automatically. What I would suggest is going through and make sure that there are no other updates that can be done for the OS. After that do a soft reset of the phone (hold down the power and home button until the Apple logo appears. Your phone will restart, this takes a few moments) and see if it works after that.

If you can't get cellular after that there might be some more in depth trouble shooting that we would have to look into through our support

  • Thank you, I tried what you said and after looking into it what my phone is mostly having issue with is group messaging and picture messages not sending. Cellular is working, however these features are still not. Is there anything else I should try in order to fix my MMS issues? Thanks!

  • Hey David, the continued group messaging and picture messaging issues could be due to a few reasons. When you're sending these messages to users who don't have iPhones you'll have to make sure your cellular data is turned on. If you're still running into this issue with other people who have iPhones we may need to take a closer look and do some trouble shooting on your phone because everything appears to be in the correct order on your account. Please contact support so we can take steps to get things working.

  • I'm having the same problem. Checked my sms, mms, and wifi settings. Tried a factory reset. I still can't send sms with Ting. Can't send pictures (even to myself) unless I'm on wifi, and can't send group messages if a non-iPhone is in the group.

  • Hi Bo,

Thanks for reaching out. Beyond ensuring that you and the recipient of your MMS messages have data on there isn't much else I can recommend without doing some more troubleshooting on your account. I can see that you've already got an ongoing help request that has been pushed to a network engagement. That should help get things sorted for you and if not please let us know so we can try something else.

  • Hi Jordan,

Are you having issues with an APN setting on your iPhone? If you are on an iOS of 10.0 or higher the APN settings are done automatically. If you are on 9.0 or lower you can still follow our guide here for instructions.

If you are on iOS 10.0 (or higher) or tried the APN settings and you're still having issues with connecting to mobile data it might be something on your account. We can look into that for you if you reach out to us through phone, online chat or through email. Our contact information can be found here
