What about blocking all robocalls?

I'm pretty familiar with the various apps for blocking telemarketing calls, but in recent months, I've been getting a real onslaught of robocalls that spoof numbers from my local exchange, apparently on the fly.

Existing telemarketing databases wouldn't be able to identify those because the numbers are random and never the same. I'm also pretty sketched out by services like TrueCaller and Hiya that mine your contacts and add your friends to their public databases. I'm a pretty big jerk, but not that big.

And I don't want to put a number block on my local exchange because, well, it's my local exchange and I get legitimate calls from it sometimes.

The only thing I've seen that seems to work on those is a feature that makes callers take a manual step like pressing 1 to complete their call. It's available on CenturyLink landlines, but I don't know if there are any mobile providers that offer it. Is there any chance you guys could look into something like that?

  • Hi Lisa,

I can pass this along to our development team to see what they say but I don't think this is going to be possible with how we work with our network partners but there is another way.

If you set up Google Voice with your Ting number, you can set up the sort of confirmation you’re looking for. You can make callers have to dial a number to actually reach you, or they’ll be forwarded to your voicemail.

A coworker has this setup and says calls spoofed from his exchange have decreased dramatically since enabling it.

I can’t seem to find a Ting article about it (though we may have to make one now), but if you have issues setting it up, just let us know here.

  • Hey Sabrina,

I have the regular Moto E4, and I love it. It does just about everything I need it to do.

As for the E4 Plus, I imagine it's very similar. We don't have a lot of direct feedback about it on the Ting network, but the Amazon Reviews are overwhelmingly positive. 4 our of 5 starts with 129 reviews as I write this. 80% gave it 4 or 5 stars.
