What good is Ting without MMS over wifi?

Please tell me what good is it trying to save money with Ting if I cannot receive MMS without DATA? I don't want to PAY FOR DATA, and if I did, I would purchase one of those unlimited plans. My old Samsung S3 would accept MMS messages over wifi, but my new Motorola G will not. Now I am asking myself why I changed phones?

  • Hi Robert, with the MMS it has become the function of the phone that the file size is so large that the only way to send it is through data. While there is no way to get around this there is an alternative that might be helpful for you that would allow you to only use wifi and not any mobile data, this would be using a third party app like Whatsapp, Textra or Viber.

With these apps, you can use them to send MMS through your wifi instead of over the mobile data network to others that have the app. I use Whatsapp personally because generally everyone I know has it and the interface is really easy to use. It allows me to send photos or videos I have on my phone and I know that it won't be counting towards my data. You will be able to find them all on the Google Playstore on your phone and they should be all free to download.

  • I also looked at third party apps. My friends don't use third party texting apps, they use DATA. Also, I could not find a paid app without  ads. I am not willing to view 30 second ads every time I want to send or receive a text.

I would pay for DATA for MMS through TING, if I could limit DATA ONLY for texting MMS. That does not seem possible. It seems that DATA is either on or off.

For now, any friend I have left will just have to send me texts as SMS.

Unless Sprint has a texting app with MMS over wifi, or Google adds the option to android texting?

  • Robert,

Have you looked at Google Voice? I use it pretty heavily and it absolutely supports MMS over a data-only connection. You can leave your phone's mobile data connection off and download the MMS sent to your Google Voice number via WiFi.

This has the added benefit of sending SMS over data as well, meaning you can save significantly on your Ting bill by not having any text usage.

  • Are you using CDMA or GSM?

For Ting CDMA you can use Textra to send MMS over WiFi if the default texting app doesn't support it. Textra doesn't require other people to also be using Textra, it's a replacement for any regular texting app.

Enable Prefer WiFi in the MMS settings, I think that's all you need to do and it works for me (and many others) with the phones data turned off.

You could try Textra on Ting GSM for WiFi MMS, but I've seen other users say it didn't work.

  • Tanks! I looked at Google Voice. I think it means having another phone number (VOIP).

I am going to try Textra on my CDMA phone. Have it installed now and asked family to send MMS and was able to read the texts. Looks like it will allow me to get MMS over my wifi. And the $3.00 for the Pro version is well worth the convenience and additional features. Why Google couldn't just do it for Android is beyond me. At least Android now puts my memory card to full use!

Tanks to the Ting community ... and tanks for your time to comment!

    Happy again!

Robert, I'm glad to see there's a solution that works for you. I learned something I did not know about MMS over WiFi!

  • Yes, I concur. My wife and I presented each other with new Moto G4 Plays for our anniversary, purchased from Ting. We are very happy with our new Moto phones (except for the MMS issues now solved) and even more delighted to spend as little as $13.50 each on a light usage month and, so far, not more than about $24.00 on a high usage month. And the customer service is awesome.

    Tanks again Ting!
