Cellular coverage

I had to go to Sturgis, SD from Northfield, MN this last weekend. When we got past Sioux Falls, I had no service the rest of the trip. Even when we spent a couple of days in Sturgis. Is coverage in that state that poor or is it my phone? I have an iPhone 5 and I was wondering if it’s because  it’s now too old for the latest iOS 11 update. That can’t be. My friend has an old flip phone with AT&T & was able to make & receive calls all the way(it seemed).

  • Hey James,

In Sturgis, both our network partners are in roaming coverage, as neither has native coverage past Sioux Falls. Your CDMA iPhone 5S should have been able to roam on Verizon for talk and text (no data coverage) all the way along 90 to Sturgis.

If your phone has roaming turned off, this could be why you had no service. To check if your roaming is on or off, follow the instructions here.

  • Thanks, you’re right, I did have roaming off.

  • You should be set for next year, then.

With roaming on, you may notice better Ting service overall in your home area, too. CDMA roaming is special like that, and is not something our GSM customers get to experience.
