Restricted All Calling and Texting Dumb Phone for Kids - Preset Contacts Only

I want a cell phone device for my children that provides the following:

   Basic phone (minimal features)

Inexpensive phone (easy to replace when broken or lost - they are children)

   No Games

   No Apps

All incoming (and outgoing) calls restricted to preset numbers only

All incoming (and outgoing) texts restricted to preset numbers only

It must be a standalone device - NOT a spyware app that is synced to another cell phone - a standalone device.

I want to be able to allow my child to send and receive cell phone calls and texts with only the people I approve.  I do not want strangers sending them (on purpose or by mistake) ANYTHING.  I do not want my child to receive ANY SPAM type of call, whatsoever.  No "Creepos" sending nasty, sexual junk to my kid!  My child may call or text grandpa, grandma, dad, mom, brothers and sisters, etc. - ONLY the ones I pre-approve.

I do not want my children playing games or listening to music in school like most all kids do during class-time today.  I do want to be able to have my child contact certain people and I want to be able to contact her when appropriate to do so (not interrupting during school, though - if I need to reach her during school I will make it a point to call the school and have them communicate to her).  There are other devices my child has for gaming and music - no gaming on this phone.

I do not understand why this is not in HUGE demand.  I assume that most parents simply do not understand what their kids actually experience through their phones!  If parents only knew what their kids were actually doing from their phones, this device I am seeking would compete with the latest, greatest cell phones in overall sales.

May I have a device that meets all of these simple and completely easy needs?

  • Hey Rodney, thanks for the device question. Based on your requirements for your child's phone you may be interested in some of the devices featured in this article: http://bit.ly/2kkt49m. I'd also recommend that you try out our Personal Shopper program. If you run those desired specifications by us we may be able to find you more options out there.

  • Thank you for the article link, but after reading the article only two of the phones might meet healthy standards. Maybe there is more information out there about inexpensive, basic phones and parental controls.

What inexpensive and basic phones have strong parental controls that will meet the standards listed?

  • That sounds like the features of a provider called Kajeet! designed to give parents control over their kids' phones. Last I checked their pricing was a little higher than Ting, though.

  • You're not wrong, Bruce.

Sadly, though, Kajeet shut down their mobile service on August 23, 2017.

  • My son has my old SPH-M300. It is a tank of a phone, is 11 years old with 8 years of continual usage. You can lock the phone to only be able to call 3 numbers. The camera access can be locked as well. Ting has outstanding tools to limit or shut off data, texts and minutes. My son gets 90 minutes per month, incoming and outgoing, no texts, no data. I will mention that calls will not be abruptly ended when that mark is reached, but the next call will not be allowed. There are no restrictions on incoming calls, unless you shut off all incoming calls. Good luck in your search.
