While I can certainly open a browser and check the dashboard - it would be nice to have a dedicated application that could quickly check usage, preferably using less data than doing so through the browser. (In an ideal world, it could be set to retrieve the info via data or SMS, at the user's preference.)

I have been using an app called 3g Watchdog. You can find it on Google Play store. They have a free and paid version. I got the paid one after trying the free one. So far it seems pretty accurate.

You can also set up alerts for usage on your account page. I have mine alert me at 4 different intervals as well as the 3G Watchdog program.
LBE Privacy Guard is great if you're rooted ;-)
I've been using 3G Watchdog for a couple of weeks, and the usage consistently doesn't match Ting's. (Ting shows less.) Does anyone else see the same? I'll try LBE Privacy Guard and see what it shows.
It doesn't match exactly for me but is within a few megabytes which is good enough for what I need it for.

I've marked this as 'Not Planned' since there are lots of apps that already do this and while we'll one day have an app for Ting, it may not track usage.

seems to be the most nuanced usage app that I've seen. It is overkill for Ting, since time-of-day is irrelevant, there are no 'free' numbers and so on, and I don't know how accurate it is, but it certainly has lots of options.
Does using my apps that need an internet connection run up my megabytes ?

Applications that need an internet connection will count towards your megabyte usage. The exact amount of usage varies quite a bit depending on the app. If you are connected to a WiFi network and accessing the apps, this activity will not count towards your megabyte usage.
