Feature Idea: Smart call filtering

Since Ting seems to be all about innovation, how about a web-based control panel that lets you set up selective filters for your number?

For example:

  • Send all toll-free numbers directly to voice mail.
  • Filter callers not in your address book during certain hours of the day.
  • Reject unknown callers.

I've always assumed the main carriers don't do this kind of stuff because, well, they're slow and bureaucratic. If it's technically feasible, Ting should jump on top of features like that.

  • There are probably apps in the Google Play store that will do that. I have not looked because I use Google Voice which offers many of those features.

  • Well, yes and no.

There are filtering apps. There are not filtering apps that can stop your phone from ringing. There's simply no API hook for it. You can detect that a phone _is ringing _ and hang up on it, but that doesn't really solve the problem of not wanting to be bothered in the first place.

Though I imagine you can probably find a way to do more thorough call blocking with a rooted phone and a custom ROM.

  • I'd love to see the OPs idea implemented.

  • At this time our best advice is to look for on-phone solutions (i.e. apps) that can help out with this task because we don't currently have plans to add this level of control through the website.

  • I forwarded my Ting cell phone after 6 rings to VOIP service and plugged in my cordless home phone base into the VOIP device. It burns Ting minutes when I take a call, but I think it's just using VOIP for outgoing calls so they don't count against my bill. You should be able to use the same technique with the Ting Sprint Home Phone Connect 2, but you may be paying double because your burning double minutes on incoming calls, and just single Ting minutes on outgoing calls from the cordless phone. I'm new to Ting so please correct me if I'm wrong. Love my Ting!
