Caller Names

In the call activity log, if 2 of your lines call each other, only one party is listed with the designated nickname, the other is only listed by its phone number. Labeling both sides would be better.

  • If you're referring to the call log on the phone itself, I don't think the nickname you set on Ting has any effect there.  The call log applications in android phones (or feature phones) aren't written by Ting and so wouldn't take advantage of any Ting specific features.

Most phones will display the name associated with a number in it's 'contacts' or 'address book' application.  When you see a phone number instead of a name, check to see if that number is associated with the nickname you want displayed in your contact list.

  • No. I'm refering to Ting.com -> Your Account -> View Details. You get a list of every phone call made.

  • Hi Samuel,

We don't match up the name to the number for inbound calls made to a device, but I think that's something we could probably do. I'll mention it to the team and see what we can do about this.

  • To add to this caller id conversation, I have always wondered why landline phones give you caller id with a name. However all mobile phones only display the number and the name is only displayed if it's in your contact list.

  • @ Jose: Could that be because there's no directory of cell phone numbers that is maintained like there is for landlines?

  • It is my understanding that the cell phone industry is gradually phasing out name-delivery with caller ID. Cell phones typically use only number-delivery for incoming caller ID anyway and then match it to a contact list item. I suppose with number portability and things like that it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain reliable caller ID.

  • Just as a FYI, my Android app tries to match numbers to nicknames in the detailed usage views. So if you use the app it may provide what you're looking for.

  • We can't really show Caller ID information in Billing Details as we don't capture that information, but we should be able to show the nickname you've given to your devices when you are making calls between phones in your account.

    We'll be adding that.

  • Nice, will make it a lot easier to track intra-company calls.

  • I would like to extend this feature to add more than just what ting lines you have in the account call log. I'd like to be able to add a nickname to other numbers that show up in the account log. So I can see how much time I spent calling a customer (instead of trying to remember what their actual phone number was), a irresponsible child is calling another irresponsible child (grrr...), etc.

  • I'm with Austin.  I'd love to be able to assign nicknames to a handful of commonly-called/texted numbers so that I can tell at a glance when my son is conversing with his usual crowd.  Unfamiliar numbers would show up as raw numbers and would get my attention as I'm skimming the list.

  • I would like to chime in with Austin and Ben - I would like to be able to put my own nickname in place of the phone numbers in the account call/texting details. Mostly I would use this to more quickly see who my teenage daughter is calling/texting most often. It gives her an extra layer of accountability that mom can not only see when/what number she is calling, but also WHO. :D
