Referral for new customers under the BYOD program.

I just had a friend switch to Ting in the new beta porting program. As such neither of us received a referral credit. I spoke to customer support and was told that only works if a new customer buys a new phone from Ting. It would also be nice to get some sort of referral credit for switching to Ting when bringing your own device. I have plenty of friends wanting to switch once they can bring there phones that they just recently purchased under Sprint.

  • Likewise. I have roughly a dozen friends who are EVO 4G users already. Would really like to receive the referal.

    Great service so far guys!

  • As we formally roll out Bring Your Own Device as an option we'll adjust the referral program to account for it, but for now, while we're still testing things, we don't have a way to associate a device being brought over to the person doing the referring (i.e. you).

  • As part of this, it would be nice if Ting could give us a email template, or form on the website, to send referrals to friends by email address. It should say some basics about the company, and then include a part where you can personalized it with your own experience. For example, "Subject: I've switched to Ting! Body: Ting is [company info provided by Ting].... I use Ting because [I add my 2 cents in here]." I think Ting would be better at marketing themselves than me!

I've told several people by word of mouth. They are currently waiting to "see how it goes" for me and then will likely switch (they'll be BYOSD too). Everyone thinks it is too good to be true! If I could email blast those that are interested, with my referral link, it would save me a lot of time. To prevent legitimate and illegitimate spam, limit it to 10 email addresses at a time, and require it to go through the Account Portal.

  • Any updates on using the referral codes with BYOSD or through purchases made through Glyde? I've got 3 different people who I've told about Ting and are considering the switch, but most will likely bring their own device.

  • Referral codes should now work with BYOSD. We missed announcing this in our latest release notes, sorry about that!

  • This may be a silly question so forgive me! Do I have to activate my service before I get a referral code? I'd like to start promoting Ting to my friends. I've looked at the referral link page but can't figure out how to generate a referral link. Would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks!

  • Hi Marcy,

Yes, your account must be active before a referral code is generated for you! You should see it show up very soon after you activate.

Karl, if you email us at help@ting.com with the email address of the person who referred you, we'll see what we can do!

  • Actually I referred someone who did a BYOSD, mister Daniel the OP poster. I will email the details. I've got more BYOSD coming as well.

  • Not the OP poster, I meant the first comment poster. Sure wish the forums had an edit button....

  • I *think* I used a referral code when I signed up for Ting, but I don't think I got a credit. I don't know about my friend. I ported my number to a placeholder phone and then BYOSD'd. Should I have received a credit?

  • Referral codes only work when purchasing a new or refurbished device from Ting (and only for the first device purchased). It looks like you did BYOD, so a referral credit wouldn't have applied, but if you did purchase a phone under a different account then feel free to give us a shout and we'd be happy to look into it.

  • Scott Allan posted above on Jan 23, 2013 that referral codes do work with BYOD now. Andrew, are you talking about something different?

  • You're right, he did. That's what happens when you take a half-month vacation, you miss out on certain updates and write things that aren't accurate. :)

In that case, if someone didn't get a credit, they should definitely give us a call or email so we can look into it.

  • My wife is currently on Sprint and I'd like to bring her over to Ting at the end of this billing cycle.  Is there a way I can "refer" her but have our accounts joined?

  • @Jason

Sorry, referrals only work when a new, independent account is created. You save so much by pooling plans, you get more than the $25 in the first few bills!

  • Now that I'm almost done converting my family to ting, I have about 3 leftover Sprint flip phones. I'm considering BYO(S)D-ing them to Ting instead of doing what I've done in the past (=selling  them as used Sprint phones on Craig's list).  The phones are on Ting's "white list." My idea is to convert/test the phones, then give them to friends to entice them to try Ting using my referral link, which will get me $25 toward service credit.   (Yes, many of my friends still have at least one flip phone per  family.)  I'm confident that they will stay with Ting once they migrate.

I prefer to do the BYOSD-ing myself before they enroll in Ting.  My questions are:  do I have to pay $6 for each device to BYO(S)D the devices over (in other words, must I add them to my own account in order to migrate them to Ting from Sprint)?  And, will my referred friends lose their $25/first phone benefit if they use the flip phone I've given them?

  • If you add them to your own account, Shirley, then you'll need to pay the $6 device fee (the promotional links won't work either, as it only applies to the first phone added to an account). You can create them under their own individual accounts, but they'll need to be activated with different credit card numbers as we can only have 1 account per credit card number.

  • Thanks Andrew.  So (checking my understanding on 4 matters) (1)  it is not possible to "tingafy"a cell phone (=move a phone from Sprint to Ting) without that phone being associated with a specific Ting account...right?

And (2) I assume that once I activate and "BYO(S)D" the device (and pay the $6 for that first month), I can deactivate it from my account, give it to my friend who would then enroll through the referral link and reactivate the phone.  They would not need to use the BYO(S)D process, right?  (3) even if the phone has had a factory reset?

In that case, (4) I would get the $25 service credit but they would lose the  $25/device credit, because the first activated device on their account had zero cash value.

  • No problem Shirley. In answer to your questions:

    (1) You are right.

    (2) That should work.

    (3) No problems there.

    (4) As long as they activate the device using the promotional URL as the first step (after the phone's been removed from your account), I believe that both parties should get the $25 Refer-a-friend service credit.

  • Andrew or Shirley, any updates?

So if a friend brings a used sprint device to ting and activates using my promotional URL, I will get the full referral credit & my friend will get a $25 credit after he activates his phone?

  • That's correct Matt.

  • How long does it take for refferal credits to show up? I just had another friend join Ting during the $50 promo period. As of yet I do not see the credit and neither does the new customer. Also on my account page, I still show 0 refferals where now it should be 2.

  • Hi Karl,

I've sent you an e-mail regarding this to the address we have for your Ting account. Let me know if you have any questions through the open support e-mail.
