Credit Card billing category

I am in the process of jumping on full steam with Ting. I am currently using our two old phones (BYOD) until out news ones arrive...

I have received a few credit card charges and noticed that your are classified as "Merchandise & Supplies - Internet Purchase". Would you be able to change your classification to Wireless service? Reason I ask, is with my credit card I receive 6% back on wireless service. :-)

Every little bit helps!

To my knowledge, this does not cost the vendor anything. Although, I could be wrong.

  • I expect Ting is using the same ID as their parent company, Tucows. That company registers Interner domains and hosts Internet web servers. That's probably why they are categorized like that.

My credit card company says that a business can only select one category for credit card billing.

I expect we will get an official response from Ting too.

  • Hi Dustin - I've done some digging into this for you. Ting is generally classified as telecommunications services, and most credit card companies should pick up on this and classify our transactions accordingly.

Unfortunately, AMEX does things a little differently. The AMEX rep I spoke to explained that merchants without physical stores must be classified as "Internet Purchases" - the physical presence takes precedence over any other criteria. Since we have no retail outlets, AMEX won't classify us as "Wireless service". Sorry about that.

  • Shoot.  American Express does go against the grain in some situations. Apparently this is one of them. I definitely appreciate you taking the time to look into this though.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Dustin,

I spoke to another user today who has the same type of situation with Amex and she said the following:

"I called American Express and they said that the only way to fix it right now is to call them each month and have them manually adjust the bonus percentage for the Ting charges"

You might want to give that a whirl.

  • Bumping this up. Did the category change for 2020? I've been getting a 5X points bonus on Ting for years with my Visa business card, as it's in the telecom category. January and February 2020 I have no bonus. What happened?

  • Follow-up: I called Chase, and the rep said the merchant category code changed to telecommunications *equipment*, instead of service. Can you fix?

  • Hi Zora,

Thanks for bringing this up as it was news to me and I've reached out to the teams in the know to see when that changed and why to get an idea of what we can do for you. I can't make any promises as far as changing that (fingers crossed!) but I'm waiting to hear back and will update you ASAP.

  • Zora,

After conferring with the great minds over on the Product management team we've been able to have this updated to categorize Ting as providing cellular services so that should update for your next bill. We're still working on some pieces around how it will be displayed on our subscriber's bills but the product description has been changed and we're really thankful that you brought this up so we could get that updated.

  • Thanks so much for looking into this, and glad to hear it's changing back! I'll double-check on the next credit card statement.

(Also adding here the term MCC, aka merchant category code, for future searches.)
