Free Usage Checking/Alerts on Phone (via Short Code?)

I'd like to be able to check current account usage/minutes/data/etc. directly from my phone without being charged for data/text usage.

Many other Sprint MNVO offer this functionality via a short code entry, or an automated call/info service.  Ting, however, only seems to offer this via the website, and there is no "free" way to access this simply on your phone.

Could this be implemented, somehow, or (failing that) could usage alert texts be made "free" if that's the closest we'll get?

  • Hi David,

This is a feature request that we are working on - we don't have one in place right now, but we will! In the meantime, you can sign up for usage alerts to be sent to your email address by logging on to your Ting account, clicking on Alerts, and setting up a warning to be sent to you via email!

  • Sadly, though, e-mail to phone would STILL be charged as a text message -- unless I'm wrong.  Right?

  • Email sent to your email address would count as data.

  • Technical correction for both of you because you seem to be missing Katie's point.  An email sent to an email address is just an email siting in an account.  How you check your email is up to you.  If you check it from your computer in the evening, it doesn't have anything to do with using data or texts on your phone.

  • I don't think I'm missing the point -- the fact of the matter is that there is no way to check your balance on your Ting phone without being charged for the privilege OR accessing external wifi.  That is what I find problematic at this point.

I'm not blaming Ting, mind you, I just wish this weren't the case, as I've never had this problem on any other MVNO, including at least two different Sprint ones.  Perhaps Sprint isn't offering this to Ting for some reason?

  • There are a lot of moving parts in this request. To be completely honest here, the amount of work to get this functionality up and running versus the gain, isn't ideal. It's a pretty neat suggestion. For now, we've marked this as "not planned," but can revisit this as demand grows. Appreciate the discussion.
