Referral credit for word of mouth

I was referred to ting by a coworker. I would really like to see an option to specify one's referrer when one signs up (a referral link may not be available). I called and asked if I could change my referral afterword, and they said I should have signed up using his referral link. I don't really care about the credit, but he deserves it!

  • Thanks for the suggestion Tag, we'll take it into consideration. In the meantime, if someone was referred by someone and didn't use their Refer a friend URL, they can give us a call and we'll see what can be done.

  • Andrew, he did in fact call (I'm the referrer in this case, btw), and the phone guy basically said no dice.  Very happy Ting subscriber, btw, I recommend you by word of mouth all the time.  Tag is one of the rare referees that has the technical savvy and/or effort to attempt to get me the referral points, but regardless I'm suggesting Ting to people all the time.  My wife has been using the network since November, and the customer service, network, and price cannot be beat.  Regardless of my low referral credit to referral ratio I will be recommending you just as much in the future. :D

  • Understood. I will say that right now we do require the Refer a Friend URL to be used as we need to be able to track it, but I'll send an email to you and Tag to look into this case.

  • Seems like there could be a unique code (just like the one that appears as a portion of your actual link) that could be "entered" when you sign up. Not sure if one 'consideration' (i.e. hesitation on Ting's part to make it so easy ;-) in this is the $25 credit the newbie is supposed to get. I've worked with other companies that had this option and it made it easier to get people to use it. With all the virus issues these days, often folks are leery of just clicking a link. Just another consideration...loving Ting! :-)

PS Another thought could be just using (i.e. having a place on the signup page for entering) the email address associated with the referrer's account. I think PayPal uses the same concept for sending payments as do other financial sites. (E.G. "Did someone refer you to our company? Enter their <email address, referral code, etc.> here so we can reward their efforts!") In this way when I refer someone to Ting, I could tell them what code or e-mail to use.

  • Currently we don't have this on the roadmap, but really appreciate the suggestions.

  • Yes! I was just discussing with a rep that because activation is not always instant (I, for example, purchased a new device to bring to Ting), I no longer clicked through the referral code when it was time to activate my account. However, my referrer absolutely deserved his bonus because he sung Ting's praises like no other.

I think a form field for an email address, name, or phone number for referral source would be really handy and wouldn't be too hard to sneak into the existing page.
