Widgets For The Ting App

After using the new Ting App for awhile now, I've come to appreciate it very much but think a couple of widgets could make it even better.  I'd like to see one or more widgets that track voice minutes, text message count, and MBs of data for the plan month.  I now use 3G Watchdog Pro to keep track of data and it has a widget that updates the data count periodically so I can see at a glance how I'm doing.  Unfortunately, the app is not very accurate with data and is frequently behind the actual usage as reported by the Ting app.  It's too far off to rely on to keep me from jumping to the next data bucket.

Being able to see cumulative totals for voice, texts, and data at a glance on the home screen would be very helpful to me.  Ideally these widgets could be set with various update options (ie, only over Wi-Fi, any data connection, more frequently over Wi-Fi, less over mobile data, etc.).  Tapping the widget would offer a menu with two quick launch options:  "Update Now" & "Launch the Ting App".  A third option could be "Configure Widget" or this just could be done from within the main app.

Another widget that might be handy is a mobile data toggle that could shut down or start up mobile data at the account level with a tap of the widget.  This would be different than toggling mobile data off at the phone level as some software (notably Google Play) sometimes uses background data even though data is toggled off.

  • Hey DC!

That's a great idea and hopefully something that can be implemented in the future. Hopefully we can get some Widgets out there for the widget loving folk (I know I love them, or at least I did when I was Android).

Regarding the toggle for the Mobile Data, this is something that wouldn't be able to work. Because you need the internet to get to your Ting account (and its features) we could certainly have it there to disable data, but in doing that you'll not be able to enable it as you'll have no active data connection (in a scenario where WiFi is not available).

  • Cool.

Regarding the Mobile Data toggle, maybe a programming guru could figure out how to make it work via text messages when Wi-Fi is not available for reactivation.  You'd get hit with one text charge to your account but that's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.  This widget is not high on the list, just a thought I had and I'm not sure how much use it would get.  I'm much more interested in the tracking widgets as I think they would be very useful.

  • I concur.  Google seems to be using a small amount of data each day despite having the phone data connection turned off.   This adds a $3 charge each month.  I understand the problem of using an app/widget to turn off data via the account.   I think using a txt message to enable data would be a great idea.  You could have the user(s) set that up on the website on which devices can/cannot update the network data connection.   Then the phone could send a txt to Ting and turn on/off the data connection.

  • I have already looked into this and was surprised that it didn't exist in my list of android widgets.

I would love to add the widget to another 2 phones I'm planning on adding to the account so they could be easily aware of usage.

    This would be great!!

  • We've been playing around with iterations of this for a quite some time, however, our current efforts will be re-focused once we get a peek at Android L. I've marked this as "planned" but have no ETA at the moment.

  • Thanks Brennan while we are at it...

There needs to be a way to have widgets on all my future devices but a way for them to not admin the account.

If I were to install the app on a kids phone he can jack with the account and change things. I guess this might fall under "multiple user login on one account" then i can logon the kids device that has limited access.  This is a must for it to work.

  • I would like to see the widget to be able to display overall usage on the account as well as individual device usage.  I can put the widget on my son's phone showing what his current usage is but I can have both my individual usage as well as overall usage.
