Expanded Data Options

2GB is not much to be shared by a group, and 1.5c/MB is expensive! Ting should expand the available data per account with more tiers to a maximum of 5GB. I would be willing to pay additional in order to get more data, especially for tethering.

  • Hi John.  We have just revamped our data pricing in response to customer feedback.  One of the changes we made due to the feedback was to drop the largest bucket so that pure per-unit pricing kicks in sooner.  And 98% of customers were saving with Ting BEFORE we dropped our prices!

We do appreciate your feedback and we will keep it in mind for future changes!

  • John, adding more tiers is actually less cost effective.  The sooner you can get into that straight-up metered area of paying per megabyte, the cheaper per unit it all is, because in real life it's almost never the case that someone uses all the way up to exactly the very top of a tier.  They are usually somewhere in the middle, and pay for that bucket, but there is a little leftover that they didn't use.

As to 1.5 cents being expensive, it depends on what your usage is.  If you use hardly any talk and text and just use a ton of data, then I suppose you may be right.  I haven't paid attention to the offerings from all of the other carriers.  If you as a group run up a ton of data, then maybe Ting isn't the best price.  They work for most people, but not all.  Since I'm around wi-fi almost all the time, I love Ting, because I hardly use any data, and we have two phones with Ting, and our bill is usually right around $30.

  • For one user I would agree with everyone here, it's fine. However, with more than one user it becomes a tight squeeze.

I was considering moving both my wife and myself onto a single plan, but only having 2Gb of data for the both of us would be unfeasible. Even though we would probably be using around that amount, I will now constantly be worrying whether we are going to be hitting that max and inflicting ourselves with per-MB charges.

I'd rather pay a flat rate for peace of mind. (5Gb for 2 lines would have been perfect here...)

  • Marius, I don't understand why you would want to pay for 5GB just in case you go over 2GB.  This isn't an overage penalty like many other carriers.  The per MB charge above 2GB is actually just about the same rate you pay for the first 2GB.  If you use 5GB between the two of you, the cost would be $74 for data.  If you use less, the cost is less.  If you would prefer to always pay $74, you could just donate the difference to charity.

  • Ah! Ok, makes sense now...

So the old 5Gb tier was just 2.5 x the cost of the 2Gb tier?

I guess it's just a psychological thing I would have to get past then...
