I know Ting already lets you set limits per line to cut off voice/text/data at predefined thresholds. I would also like to see the option to throttle data speeds (perhaps go to 2g) at predefined limits. In my case, this is for a childs phone. If they burn through their limit watching videos, I want to stop that before costs skyrocket, but I'd like to still be able to contact them via email and have basic web browsing.
Data throttling limits

Ting doesn't have anything to control the speed of data access, but I guess I just don't understand the need for this situation as you described it. It obviously makes a lot of sense to set limits on the data usage of a kid's phone because yes, they can blow through a ton of data without necessarily knowing what is going on with that. So yes, I recommend putting limits on that so they don't blow up your bill. What I don't understand is using email on a data connection to contact your child. For contacting your child, calling or texting both seem like the much more appropriate tools for that, so that I don't see the issue of data being off if they used up their allotment.
If, as an MVNO, Ting can't throttle data, that would be the end of it. However, many of the main carriers (Tmo, ATT, etc) offer this feature. It's a great way to 'limit' your monthly data, but not be completely cut off for the rest of the month.
This would be a GREAT feature. Please implement it.
Incidentally Boost Mobile does this over a particular threshold so I know it should be possible for Ting (slow to 2G speeds).
James,
Ting would need to hide the costs for the slower data. Ting aims to avoid hidden charges wherever possible. I doubt this will be planned.
I wouldn't want the data free. I just want to limit certain phones in the event they decide to use way too much, without cutting them off.
