Will Gingerbread be coming to Ting's HTC Detail
Answered

I noticed that while the HTC Detail Ting sells runs Froyo, the Sprint variant of the same device runs Gingerbread. While I'm thankful that I don't have to deal with Sprint's bloatware, I am wondering if Gingerbread will be coming to the Detail?

  • FWIW, I was able to successfully root my Detail and install Sprint's Gingerbread build:

  • I was able to install Cyanogenmod 7.2.0 , their stable Gingerbread build, on one of my HTC Detail phones. There is no Sprint bloatware, of course.

  • Also, just to note, there is an official update from HTC to push this to Gingerbread. It's available as an in phone system update.

  • Is this recent?  I just got my phones last month and the newest updated for the Detail were FroYo (2.2) not Gingerbread.

  • I thought it was for gingerbread, but I might be mistaken. I had mine rooted, so I wasn't able to push that update out. I'm just running CM7.

  • I checked my wife's Detail last night. Her phone is up to date and it is still running Android 2.2 FroYo.

  • Hi all - unfortunately we won't see Gingerbread on the Detail, at least not 'officially'. Although the Sprint retail version of the phone (the "Shift") was released with Gingerbread, Sprint/HTC stopped development for the Detail when it was end-of-lifed, before it got the Gingerbread update.

  • Taylor,

The EVO Shift 4G was announced end-of-life in February 2012, long after Gingerbread had been released. I just bought 2 Details from Ting in June, less than 2 months ago,.

There are online reports that the EVO Shift received an OTA update to  Gingerbread in June 2011, a year before I bought my phones.

Do you mean that the Detail was discontinued before Ting even started selling it?  If so, why wasn't that disclosed and the phone deeply discounted?

Sorry, but I am very confused here.

  • Taylor,

Can we at least get an RUU (Restore Update Utility) file so we can return our device to stock if we try non-stock OSs? There are many RUU files available for the EVO Shift, but none available for the Detail.

  • Hi Bruce -

Sorry for the confusion. By 'end-of-lifed', I mean 'announced end-of-life by the OEM' (i.e. that HTC would stop manufacturing them at some point in the future). When Sprint/HTC were deciding whether to spend the resources on a Gingerbread build for the Detail, they probably knew it would be EOL'd in several months, and chose to focus development efforts elsewhere. At the time you purchased the Detail, both it and the Shift had been discontinued: they were no longer being manufactured, and there was a limited quantity available.

  • Taylor,

When Sprint announced the Detail in August 2011, they said it had the same features as the EVO Shift, which had Gingerbread at that time. If the hardware was the same, it should not have taken much additional effort to release the Detail with the current OS.

If the Detail was discontinued the same time as the EVO Shift, then TIng sold the phone for less than 2 weeks before it was discontinued. and there was no indication, by clearance pricing or otherwise, that the phone had been discontinued

The main concerns are support (no software recovery options for the Detail) and there are now some Android apps that will not install on FroYo. (Cisco Jabber for Android is one app that I know of.)

Thank you for letting us know now, though, Any ideas for ongoing support? Sprint has downloads, etc. for the Shift, but I know of nothing for the Detail.
