Are TING phones free of Carrier IQ ?
Answered

As of mid January, Sprint declared it would eliminate Carrier IQ from its phones.

Has this happened? Are TING phones free and clear of that kind of privacy invasion?

  • I can confirm that on the Optimus S it isn't present on the latest firmware update (ZVJ) released on about 4/4/2012. The stock firmware (ZVD) that one would have out of the box DOES still have carrierIQ active.

It would appear that whether or not its active is dependant on Sprint and their efforts on the phones...

    Thanks Adam,

Yes, I did find it active on my phone. Not sure if it is transmitting data or just 'running' in the background doing nothing. It is running and cannot be killed without root. Since the new 2.3 update is coming, I am going to be patient and wait. Once the dust settles from that, I will review and root my device for various reasons. Thanks for confirming that it is not on 2.3! NICE!

  • No problem!

In case you're interested (since you're talking about rooting anyway) there are a number of forums on android central with the stock ZVJ update. All you need to do is download the file to the sd card and flash it with the stock recovery. No root or other android magic required.

  • Yeah, I have been investigating it. I wanting to be clear before doing anything. Was not sure if those goodies that I saw were just generic ZVJ or Sprint versions that would match correctly. Don't want to screw anything up, especially since I am not in a rush or anything. Certainly look forward to rooting so I can take full advantage of AVAST's security features. Part of my job is to trek the dark parts of the web so I need protection. lol

  • If I understand it correctly, the Samsung Conquer when updated to Android version FC17 2.3.6 is free of Carrier IQ.  It was present on the old version (EG15 2.3.4).  Warning:  Rooting your phone with SuperOneClick while on version EG15 will prevent the update to FC17.  The current version of SuperOneClick will not root a phone with FC17 present.

See this thread for more info on rooting:  https://help.ting.com/entries/21315988-samsung-conquer-4g-rooted-and-working-flawlessly-with-2-3-6

  • This is a key concern for my family as we hope to replace out aging iPod touch functions with the new Android phones. Without some knowing whether Sprint is tracking my browsing history I can not judge what constitutes safe internet access. I am using the Samsung Transform which has updated itself to Android 2.3.6.

  • Hi all - Sprint has confirmed that all devices are now CIQ-free. New devices are manufactured without it, and any existing devices have had an OTA update pushed to disable and remove CIQ.

  • Also, if I am not mistaken, carrier IQ would need a monitoring server to be running in order to spy on you in the first place. With Carrier IQ being mostly shut down, I don't think any sprint devices still running carrier IQ would have a server in which to monitor them anyways. So, even if it is collecting data, there are no eyes on that data anymore.
