Will the Optimus be getting gingerbread>
Answered

Sprint customers are getting it.  Will it be automatic, or do we have a choice?

Thanks

  • I know Sprint formally announced it was going to release a fixed version for the Optimus S. Updates were to occur between now and finish by  the 21st. Last time they had tremendous problems with the release back in 9/2011. We shall have to see how this goes. I would backup everything right now in case it gets forced on you or you accidentally allow it. They have spent a great deal of time working on it so I am guessing this will be a good update. Who knows though.

  • I ended up moving to ZVJ (gingerbread update) and was able to root using a zvd root. here:

Had to wipe the phone though.

  • BTW, my wife has the same phone, but it has not received the update. Everything seems to work just fine with the new firmware.

  • It looks like the Gingerbread update is making its way across the network as we speak... no negative feedback from customers have been reported folks.

  • Just a warning that the update will download over 3g even if you have background data turned off. I have my phone set up to not use background syncing when on 3g so I only use data when I actively want it and discovered the update downloading in the background over 3g. I had just gotten home and immediately turned on wifi. Think I switched it well before the whole 94 mb download finished. Especially considering last month I only used a total of 96 mb.

  • Another warning, maybe.   It appears that the update has broken Netflix sync.  After the update, the netflix player audio runs at normal speed, but the video is very slow.  Anyone else with the update able to get netflix to work properly?

  • I would say confirmed to my previous warning about the update making Netflix non functional with the update to ZVJ.  I tested it on my wife's ZVD baseband phone and it was fine, good sync.  Hers was updated today to ZVJ and her netflix video is now at a crawling speed while audio is normal.

  • Received the Gingerbread update notice 2 days ago - updated on standard Optimus S (not rooted). Everything is stable, and no data was lost. I am using GrooveIP and used to have issues with wifi going to sleep. That problem has either improved or totally disappeared with Gingerbread. It will take a few more days to get final results. I'm in almost constant wifi zone and use Google Voice to reduce minutes. Last month bill was $12 - might get to $9 this month. Using Obihai boxes and Obion for free international calls. I almost got a Republic Wireless beta phone, but their program was chaotic, and their billing system seemed like it was manual. I got a refund from them - and Ting is great.

  • Could you test Netflix?  They have a free month sign up thing if you dont normally use it.  No problem if you cant.

I was interested in Republic, but at $20 per month I dont think it saves much money over Ting, especially if you have more than one phone.  I am using GrooveIP some, but I dont find it to be all that great. Voice quality is off.

I did notice the Wifi radio is a little snappier with ZVJ.  It seems to connect faster and hold the connection better.

  • After a few days with the Gingerbread update I had to do a factory reset. The phone would lock up and could not get screen to come on and had to pull battery. Would happen a few times a day. 16 hours after reset and no problems yet.

  • Can confirm Netflix not working well. never tried before so can't compare how it is to before update. Honestly I probably would have never tried on such a low powered phone.

  • Thanks Rodney, It actually worked very well with Froyo. (ZVD)  I have been impressed with the phone so far.

  • Graham Lane - I tried netflix with LG Optimus S and stock Gingerbread (no rooting). Is there such a thing as "emergency netflix", for when you must have a video on a small barely viewable screen? I killed background tasks, and streaming video is still somewhat jerky. Speedtest says I have 1.1/3.4 Mbps. Also tried netflix on a Viewsonic G-Tablet (dual core, 1 GHz, Tegra, Vegan tab) and there the video was perfect. Speedtest on the G-tablet was 4.9/18.4 Mbps on same wireless router.

  • I got my upgrade to Gingerbread last night. I woke up this morning and the notice was waiting for me. Glad my wifi absorbed the bandwidth! lol So far, things seems just fine. Hectic day. Had little chance to explore and test. Did notice the UI was slightly different, more tweaks and settings have appeared. Pinch/Zoom works slightly differently than before. Overall, a great experience. Was neat to eat my breakfast and watch the process occur! lol

  • I have returned to Froyo.  ZVJ is too buggy, seems slower and wasnt worth it.  I did like the new keyboard though, but that is available in the market separately.

  • I am thinking of going back as well. I had to pull the battery many times after the update. I did a factory restore (I don't have much installed on phone anyway) and it helped but still occasionally have to pull battery. Basically I can't get the screen to come on and usually just when I finish a phone call. Froyo worked perfectly. Not even sure why I updated. I should have waited.

  • I have had no problems at all so far - 5 days and counting. Works as usual for me. I don't have much customized, nothing rooted, etc. Keep my fingers crossed!

  • OK. Been very busy and using this phone a lot, in various environments, locations, etc. Yeah, it has been buggy for me lately. Now it might be some apps that need to be updated. But so far, some sluggishness, lock screen does not always ask for pass code, it just opens. Seems to harass me for 'profile update' when I roam or attempt to connect to some open WiFi APs, like at hospitals, etc. also profile updates seem to always fail even though I have solid cell signal. If profile update is successful it asks again within 10 minutes or so. Very flaky.

  • Is this worth upgrading then?  Any other ideas?  The phone's not a week old, I figure this is the time to play with it.  If I do the factory reset, do I need to re-activate my phone, or will it keep that info?  And will it stop bugging me to update?
