If/When will Ting offer an Android app to track usage?
Answered

The question kind of says it all.

An app specially made by Ting would be pretty awesome.

  • Very well thank you. :)

We're doing final internal QA and figuring out how we'll do the beta test. You should hear more details in the next week or two.

We MAY have said that before though! Our goal is always to release things as early as we can so that we can get feedback and adjust. At the same time, we don't want to release something that we KNOW isn't right. And we also have to take extra care with something that is in high demand and deals with people's data.

So we're walking a fine line on this one.

Glad your keen for the release though!

  • Feature request: The ability to block and unblock phone data usage from the Ting app.

  • Hey David,

You should have that option available to you.

Through the cellular network you have the option to DISABLE data through the app. However as you need Data to connect to it you would have no way of getting back in there to enable it. It's a bit of a catch 22.

WiFi is your friend with this one. You can use WiFi to enable and disable features as needed through the app.

  • Hi, Paraic,

I ran into just that situation with no wifi to be found. I was stuck, unable to activate data on my device. Hence my request to be able to do it locally. If it's not in the cards to add it to the Ting app, are you aware of another that achieves the same goal? Thanks!

  • David, It IS available through the app, but you would only be able to make that change in the app while connected to data, hence the need for wifi if you want to turn it back on. But the setting IS in the app already.

Alternatively, if you want to be able to turn data on and off for your phone specifically, why not just use the setting in the phone itself (usually somewhere in Settings->Wireless and Networks->Mobile Networks or something similar)? You won't be disabling data with regard to your Ting account, but you would still be able to turn it off and on at will on your phone.

  • Steve, I'll go ahead and take that approach. I've just come across phones (like my wife's Motorola Photon w/ stock ROM) that allow you to turn off 4G in the settings, but not turn off mobile data entirely. I was just able to activate my Evo One on Ting yesterday (Yay!), and it does indeed allow me to disable mobile data in the settings. Thanks again.

  • David - Here are the instructions for the data on/off for the Photon - http://support.sprint.com/support/tutorial/Turn_mobile_data_on_or_off_Motorola_PHOTONtrade_4G/25476-1091

However - what I use on our phones is this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomatox.dataswitchpro    ($0.99)

The free version is at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomatox.dataswitch - try it out first

The purchased version adds an icon in the status bar (or a widget) that immediately shows you which state you're in (with a red or green indicator), and lets you toggle it from the swipe-down menu - at least that's what I remember.  The one thing to remember with this app, or any similar app you might find in the Play store, is that if you use that app to turn data off, use the same one to turn it back on.  Some of the apps take different approaches, and the safest way is to use it for both ends of the change.  Note also that as for other apps, one may work better than another on your particular phone.
