How to block a number
Answered

I have my phone and phone number less than 1 month and keep getting "new picture mail" from a phone# I do not recognize. How can I block this number, I do not want to open the link and it is eating up my text minutes.

  • I second this feature.  I think being able to block texts and voice calls is extremely important.

  • While we don't currently support blocking numbers for inbound calls (though there are apps for that for our Android phones), you can block inbound text messages from advertisers, vendors, and other unwanted parties, as described in our Knowledge Base at: https://help.ting.com/entries/21010081-text-messaging

To block unwanted incoming text messages, send a message to the number '9999' with the message 'block' followed by the short code or phone number of the sender you wish to block.

For example, to block incoming text messages from 416-999-2430, the message would read: "block 4169992430".

After the block was successful, the system will reply to let you know the number has been blocked.

To unblock a previously blocked number (let's say 416-999-2430), send a message like this: "allow 4169992430".

To retrieve a list of all blocked senders, send the message command "list" to '9999'.

    Cheers.

    Andrew

  • Are you considering support for the blocking of numbers for inbound calls in the future? I just activated my phone yesterday, I haven't made a single outbound call on it, nor have I given my new number to anyone, but due to the previous owners of my number, already I've received 3 calls from a Boston number (which tries to sign you up for a credit card) and 1 call from an Oklahoma number (which was a credit collection agency).

  • No, this is unlikely to be a feature anytime in the near future, if ever. For the time being, you'll have to stick with apps to do so.

  • Is there a particular reason why we will not have this much needed facility?

  • Hi Terry,

The reason it's not available is that we simply don't have support for it, and as Andrew said, there's nothing to indicate that we will in the near future.

I understand a lot of people being keen on this feature, and for anyone where an Android app is insufficient and are getting a lot of unwanted phone calls associated with previous owners of the number or whomever, we'd be more than happy to help you change your number free of charge.

  • Just what I needed. I didn't ask for movie reviews via TXT but they started coming anyway. This feature is pretty cool, easy to use too.

Will blocked txt messages add to the total messages that I accrue in a month?

  • Hi Thomas,

No; since they've been blocked, and have not been received, they will not count towards usage total.

  • Here's what I'm trying with my Sanyo Katana LX:  add the unwanted # to my Contacts and select NO RING for the ringer for that contact.  I bet it works!

  • Hey Mark, thanks for the great suggestion. That's a strategy I use myself when a telemarketing company decides to spam my number. I change the contact name to 'DO NOT ANSWER' as well.

  • Thanks for the text block help, very nice.

To deal with phone calls I suggest using Google Voice and forward no answer your Ting number to the GV number.  Set the GV number so it only forwards Contacts you know and the rest will be dealt with as if they go to a number no longer in service.  Works like a charm for me and in the off chance its some one you really needed if they leave a message you can get it and then add them to your known contacts list for the future.

  • Will blocking a specific number from texting work across all phones, or does it only block messages to the phone that sends the request?

  • Hi Margaret! It only works for the phone that sends the request.  It's specific to the phone number, not the account.
