Somehow got Voicemail-to-Text
Answered

This isn't exactly a "problem", just something odd. I'm using an LG Optimus S. Starting around September 9, all my incoming voice messages have been accompianied (in the visual voicemail) by a written transcription. But I definitely wasn't signed up for the Voicemail-To-Text service; the button for that was still there, and if I clicked it it said something about the option of starting a free trial.

As part of mucking around to see what was going on, I clicked the button to start the free trial. This brought up an "Agree/Disagree" window. I hit the back button on the phone, and this was somehow interpreted as tapping "Agree"! So now I'm in the free trial, which will presumably be the same as before. My minor worry is that after the trial's over the settings will correctly "recognize" that I shouldn't have the service and I'll lose it, but it was icing on the cake to begin with.

Anyone else have this happen? Was it just a bug, or is it possible that, say, an upate of some app I downloaded provided his feature without my realizing it?

  • Hey Christopher,

From what I understand, at the end of the trial you likely will lose access to the service. It's a Sprint service that we're still working on getting officially live on Ting, but it's still in the works and we don't have a due date at this point.

    Cheers.

    Andrew

  • @VICKEY

You should avoid posting information like this in a public forum. When you have a support issue like this you should use the support request link. https://help.ting.com/requests/new

A Ting support person should remove the information.

  • Thanks, Zarthan!

Hi Vickey, I have seen your email to us and will be answering you there.

For reference, everybody, this is a service that Sprint has turned on for new customers, and the service is turned off after 30 days if the customer does nothing. You can also turn the service off from the application:

    Menu > voicemail > menu > settings > voicemail-to-text > unsubscribe

    Hope this helps!

  • Cool, it all makes sense now. Furthermore, you can extend the trial period by "signing up" for a free trial -- a little confusing, but I think (I'm not positive) that you can get two consecutive trials in a row this way. (I assume this is common to all Sprint phones and so Sprint is aware of this.)

  • I would actually be interested in continuing the service - however, my "free trial" is up, and, in line with what Andrew said in September, it won't allow me to subscribe.  Does anyone know if there's a workaround, or, failing that, when Ting might be able to offer this service?  I've noticed other voicemail-to-text apps also say they won't work with prepaid services, and perhaps this somehow relates to the service not working with Ting as well?

  • I can't speak to the restriction on Sprint's branded service, but in general the third party ones work by becoming your voicemail provider. In order to do that, you need to configure busy/no-answer forwarding on your phone number to point to the voicemail provider, and that forwarding is something most prepaid services don't allow you to set up.

However you can do it on Ting through the dashboard settings. Many people are doing that with Google Voice, which offers text transcription. Just be aware that you are charged minutes for the duration of a forwarded call.

  • HI David, as Trevor and Zarthan are saying, your best bet is a third party service.

This is because there isn't any way to continue in the use of the Sprint service as your phone doesn't connect directly to Sprint's billing system.

  • Here are instructions for setting up Google Voice Lite for Voicemail:

    https://help.ting.com/entries/23265727-Google-Voice-Voicemail-setup

The hoops are so Google activates voicemail service for your Ting Number.  Works fine for me so far.  Wish you could set number of rings before call is forwarded in the dashboard, but otherwise works well.

I had my sprint number integrated with Google Voice and really missed that when I ported over to Ting, but this does everything I actually missed.

  • I had the app on my phone intending to agree to get the app, but waited to long.  Went to sprint website and tried to get the app and the one that they pointed me to said that it was not compatible with my phone.  Confused but would like to find out where to get the app.

  • The service actually isn't compatible with Ting, James, aside from the 30 day trial.
