Android Market
Answered

I recieved my referbished Samsung Transform Ultra today, and successfully activated the phone, and connected to my google account. Unfortunately, I can't connect to the marketplace to get apps. I can open the app, and search for apps, , but when I try to install, it waits for a couple seconds, then gives me a sorry! the application market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again. I've tryed to restore it to factory default, but it still gives me this error.

I've also tried to connect via USB to my computer, and USB connection also fails. Is there a special driver I need to install on my PC to connect to it? The entire point of this phone was to enjoy the capabilities and apps available. without access to the market, it's just a basic phone.

  • Play Store gave me a few issues after logging in initially but I cleared the data for it and the framework as discussed here  http://androidforums.com/transform-ultra-all-things-root/496713-how-fix-google-talk-authentication-failed.html and then was able to download Groove IP Lite and a couple other apps with no force close crashes.

  • So let me get this straight.  We have to wait a week to find out what the "further options" are on a defective phone?  Does that seem strange to anyone else?  I just assumed that a defective phone would be replaced with a working phone asap.  Although to be fair, I never received an update on my support request.

  • They said they would make it right, and I believe them. They appear to have first rate support from my recent experience. I worked with Glen from Ting support on the phone Friday when they discovered the issue and pulled the remaining refurbished devices from the devices page. He was very willing to get this issue resolved and apologetic. It may indeed take a week, but that's the nature of working with an online company for your cellular business. You can't just walk into your neighborhood cell store, Buy a phone and plan, and  resolve any issues before you leave the store. It isn't that convenient, but again, that's just the nature of it.

  • Hi Cora. We'd love to just send you a working replacement of your Samsung Transform Ultra, but we'd first need to have one to send you. We are working on the solution as quickly as we can, and we'll have an update for you (and everyone) the second we have it sorted out. In the meantime though, I did just send you a response to your email to us.

  • Thanks Andrew for getting back to me especially on a weekend. We have found a solution that works for us and appreciate all the help. It is nice and refreshing to speak to a live person (Sarah) instead of a computer and to get a response online on a weekend is nice too.

    Thanks again

  • You should notify everyone that purchased the phone immediately, I'm new to the smart phone thing and was testing out your phone service and since the roaming wasn't working and I was traveling this weekend, well the darn phone beeping (lost/searching for service) was about to drive me to canceling when I stumbled on this post.

  • So I'm actually having a very similar problem as Jeff, except I have the Refurbished LG Marquee and I can't even open the Google Play App.  It just gives me the same exact error : sorry! the application market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.  This happen to anyone else with the Marquee?

  • Whoops, the error actually reads: Sorry!  The application Google Play Store (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly.  Please try again.  So I'm running Google Play Store and Jeff has Market.

  • Doug - it definitely wasn't spam, and I'm glad you ended up finding it. :)

Coung - Although this is the first I've heard of it, this likely sounds related to the Transform Ultra Issue. I've sent you an email about this, and please get back to me if you have any other questions.

  • thanks to tom gandy for solving this problem, am happy ftm. Had to figure out how to open adb shell and created a backup image. Might prefer original theme, but this works.

  • I'm just curious if Ting knows how long a fix/solution for the Transform Ultra is going to take?  My email I got said I would hear back by November 1st, but do you anticipate there being an actual solution by then?

I ask because right now my phone is almost useless to me with no roaming, and if the fix is going to take much longer than Thursday, I may just need to buy a different phone and return this one.

I really like both the Transform Ultra and the price I got it for, so I'd rather not do that, but I can't be without a reliable phone for this long not knowing if Thursday will be just an update or an actual solution and whether that solution will be immediate or will require another wait.

Definitely not trying to be difficult here!  I know this was unanticipated and Ting is working on it as fast as they can, but more information would be nice so I can decide what I need to do for my own personal situation.

  • Christopher,

I would call Ting for the official timeline. They are very responsive and helpful.

  • So, Google Play started working for me again, but it started right after I installed the Amazon Appstore.  Anyone else try this?  Anyway, I'm fixed now, and thanks Rob for getting back to me earlier.

  • How do you go about installing the amazon appstore? I haven't been able to download a thing.

  • Jeff,

    Instructions are at  https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000626391&ref_=mas_sparkle_start

Basically, you download the app (if it is on your PC, you can connect your phone to copy to the SD card).

You then need to enable installing from unknown sources on tour phone. You can then select the file in your File manager and install it from there.

  • Thanks Bruce, I had actually went to investigate this and try it... It's going to have to wait though, as I took out my SD card last night, and I need it apparently to do this install.

Question.... If it fails to install in the suggested method, Can I take the downloaded file, place it on the SD, and install it to the phone manually from the SD card? I'm not sure how I would access it to launch it.

I've got a ticket in concerning my Call with Glen on Friday... 33210... Was curious as to what to expect.

  • BTW, My phone is recognized by my PC now, but I still can't actually see it in explorer. (File manager is so win 3.1 isn't it???  ;)  )

  • Jeff,

After the app is on our phone's SD card (either through mounting the phone or you may be able to remove the card & copy the file to it). enable installing from unknown sources (on my phone, Settings -> Applications -> Unknown Sources[checkbox]). You can then use the file manager app on the phone. Usually if you long-press on the file name, installing will be an option.

  • You;re welcome.

Just for terminology information, some people call this method "sideloading" since you are installing the program from the SD card rather than from Googl'.s app store.

  • Again, Good to know. I've dealt with computers for 30 years, but other than the HTC Desire I had for 2 weeks over 2 years ago, this is my first real android experience. Battery life on the desire totally sucked! charging more than using in that case. I can get almost 2 days with my 3800mAH battery on this phone!  It will be a much better experience once I can load apps! I'll know more in a couple hours!

  • Well, Good news, and bad.

Good news is the Amazon approach works for me. The bad is the Google market is still broken for me.

As for my computer issues... I installed the micro SD card into my phone again, and plugged it into my Win7 x64 system, and it shows in the Devices and Printers window, and it's properties indicate it is Drive P:\, however, when I open explorer and try to open "Removable Disk (P:),  I am prompted with the Insert Disk Dialog. Not sure what's going on there. I even erased the card in the phone itself, and still it's not seen by windows.

  • I was also unable to get the regular Google market to work via the Amazon route.  I did also try getting the current Market APK and sideloading that.  With and without the Amazon app market.  And clearing caches and data for the market and rebooting.  Hopefully, Ting will finally talk to us about the STU issues tomorrow.

  • Ok, Slowly, I'm getting the hang of this android thingy... Figured out how to connect via USB now. I didn't realize that when you plug it in, you had to click the USB connect notification before you could access the storage.

One thing is still driving my crazy though. I can find Doubletwist on Google Play market, but not on Amazon's app store. Is there someplace I can get Doubletwist so I can sideload it?

  • I believe the current version of Doubletwist player is only available through Google Play.
