Question about porting a number from Verizon
Answered

I currently have a phone number with Verizon that I'd like to keep.  My contract has been up for a while so I can freely switch whenever I want, and I've just purchased a Ting-compatible device that's on the way.  My question is this: when, if at all, do I cancel my Verizon account?  Do I wait until the number has finished porting, or do I cancel the account before I start the porting process?  Or will porting automatically cancel it for me?  Thanks for your help!

  • The answers to your questions can all be found at: https://help.ting.com/entries/20842287-Transferring-phone-numbers

I'll answer them here though as well:

    Q. What happens to my current wireless service after I transfer my wireless number to Ting?

    A. Your account will automatically be cancelled.

    Q. Do I need to cancel my current service to complete the number transfer to Ting?

    A. No, in order to transfer your phone number to Ting, your service must be active. After the number port has been completed, your previous carrier will automatically cancel your account.

    Q. Do I continue to pay my existing wireless provider while my number is being transferred to Ting?

    A. Yes. Do not cancel your service while your phone number is in the process of porting to Ting. After the number has successfully ported to Ting we suggest that you call your old provider and ensure you will no longer be billed for that phone number.

  • Ah okay, I could have sworn I looked through the knowledge base before asking, but apparently not enough!  Sorry for the trouble, and thanks!  :)

  • Hi Heather,

If the number was canceled by the other carrier we wouldn't be able to transfer it over to us. The number needs to be active for our system to receive it. What I might suggest is talking to the original carrier to see if they can re-activate it so that you can transfer it over. There may be a cost involved with this depending on the original carrier.

If you are unable to re-activate it we can offer you a new number.
