How to delete e-mail from the Android e-mail app that came with Samsung Galaxy Nexus

There is no way to empty or delete the e-mails move to the "trash" folder.  Do I need to reboot the phone (and delete all data) just to delete e-mail?

Or, is the basic e-mail app designed so poorly by Google so users will be forced to use the G mail app?

I guess you get what you pay for--no wonder the Android operating system source code is available for free!  Talk about buyer's remorse--I should have listened to more experienced smartphone users I know and gone with an Apple iPhone/AT&T.
