Group SMS messages are not received correctly
Answered

If I'm sent an SMS as part of a group from someone using an iPhone, the message shows up as a white box. It looks like a blank picture. BUT - no one has attempted to send me any pictures. These are always text-only SMSes. How can I fix my SMS so that I get the messages?

My phone: Nexus S 4G. OS: Android 4.1.1

  • I have three of the LG Marquees, the incoming group messaging broke (used to give an error message saying the message couldn't be retrieved)  at the same time as the photo attachments broke in the spring.

It looks like photo attachments is fixed, but now for group messages the phones just get a blank message.

What's needed to fix the group messaging?

  • My daughter's LG Marquee can't receive group messages either.  It's been like this ever since we switched to Ting back in April.  Would love to know how to fix this.  Also, her phone has never benn able to connect to WiFi.  It tries repeatedly to connect but immediately disconnects.  When I called back in April, we couldn't get it working.  Does anyone know if a fix has been found for this, too?  Thanks!

  • I recently came across a similar problem on my Galaxy S3. I would receive regular SMS texts just fine from iphone users. But when it is an MMS or group text, I get blank messages. What I did was install a 3rd party SMS app, like GoSMS Pro, and I was able to view mms messages from iphone users (the old and new messages). If you would like to keep using the stock android messaging app, you can just disable the notifications on GoSMS. You do need to keep the app installed in order, however, to continue to view MMS messages from iphone users. Its an annoying workaround, but it works. The problem seems to be on Apple's side with their iMessage feature automatically enabled on most iPhones when sending texts.

  • Thanks for the tip Jeffrey. I'll try it out.

RE: iMessage... I tried disabling it on my husband's iPhone 5 and sent a group text, which I still didn't receive (got the white box instead). So I'm not convinced it's an iMessage issue (though not ruling out Apple altogether).

  • With so many people having this same issue, has there been any sort of global solution devised?  Or is this really an issue that requires user-specific attention?  I'm having the issue as well.  I did install GoSMS as suggested above, but it didn't render an old group message from an iPhone user readable.   I'll have to wait to see how new messages work.

  • While I do not have an immediate problem at this time, I've had the same issue receiving group SMS messages on my Ting'd HTC Arrive (running Windows Phone 7.8).  I usually turn off cellular data service on the phone, which may contribute to the problem.  I've been able to retrieve the messages after I've turned cellular data on.  Unfortunately, I've never had data turned on when I've received a new group SMS.  I think all group SMS texts I've received have come from iPhone users.  Perhaps group messages are converted to MMS before/while being sent?

  • Hey there Jerod, It appears that the messaging platform used by iPhones sends their group messages as an MMS message. With out access to data, you won't be able to view those messages.

  • I'm having this issue as well. We switched to Ting over the weekend and love it but not being able to receive group MMS messages is frustrating. Before we switched, I was using the Facebook Messaging app as my default messaging app and it handled group messages well but now it just sends it to me from the original sender, then all replies to that message from the rest of the group come to me just from that person, so trying to keep track with the conversation is really difficult. I understand that data needs to be enabled to view these messages but I have data enabled so I would think it should work.

Can I get an email to help work through this issue as well or is there a more generic fix to this issue since this thread started? Thanks!

  • Hey Jason,

I definitely can see the frustration in that - the issue with group messaging from iPhone users should be resolved once the sender upgraded to the iOS7 operating system. I have sent you a follow up email where we can further troubleshoot if this is an issue with your specific device.

  • I can receive group messages with no problems, but when I send them is when I have issues. It shows the message as sent, but none of the recipeints get it. Can you point me in the right direction to fix this issue? Thanks.

  • I don't know if this is a Ting issue or not.  I use ting on my Android 4G and since the last update when I send an sms to someone they get it but I don't see my message in the 'threads' any more.  Now all I see is the persons messages to me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.  I have no way of seeing my responses to others.

  • Hi there,  I am having the same issue but  even after reading what's in here it still hasn't been solved.  Here is a breakdown of the problem and all phones involved:

In a group message, I can receive texts and read them within the group, however, when I send a response it shows up as sent on my phone, but on the recipients phone it shows up as a "blank" text.  So I can read all the messages in teh group but when I respond they see nothing.

My phone: HTC One (new one that just came out) Android

Friends phones:  All of them are IPhones and they are all running on the new iOS.

1 out of every 10 texts goes through to them but nearly all show up as blank.  Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.  I downloaded SMS Pro, and it seems to work, but the app is slow and slows down my phone.

    Regards,

    Tim

  • I am having the same issue as Tim.  iPhones cannot see my group messaging.  This is now affecting my regular text messaging when I send a text to multiple users.  I have already turned on my group text in my message settings.  I am using an app called Group SMS by Microsolve LB.  Is there a more compatible application for my HTC Windows Phone 8X.  Please help!!

  • Hi Ernest, can you confirm whether those users have the latest operating system version installed on their phones? We have had some reported conflicts with the stock messaging app when the other party has an old OS version installed, so that can be a starting point. Be on the lookout for an email with further troubleshooting instructions.

  • Can I add my name to the list? I've got a Galaxy Nexus. When my friend with a Windows phone sends a group text, it comes as MMS and is displayed either as an empty message or a white box. I've got MMS turned on, and am on Wi-Fi.

Additionally, another friend sends me MMS group texts, which I can see, but when I reply, even though it says sent, she never receives the reply.

  • Hi James,

Make sure that your MMS URL is set properly, here are the instructions for the Galaxy Nexus:

    1. From the dial pad, enter * # * # 3 2 8 2 # * # *
    2. Select "Edit"
    3. Enter your MSL (found under device settings on your ting account)
    4. Select "Others"
    5. Select "MMSC URL"
    6. Select "MMSC"
    7. Enter  http://mms.plspictures.com
    8. Select "back" four times
    9. Reboot
    10. Send a picture message to confirm

You should try to receive the MMS message while connected to a 3g or 4g network.
