Problems Receiving MMS/iMessage Messages
Answered

Most of my friends have iPhones, so this happens to me a lot. Every time I'm involved in a group message with iPhone users, Apple sends it as an iMessage message. But since I'm on an Android device (Galaxy Nexus), I see it as an MMS message. However, it never ever works for me. I see it as a blank message and it tries to download it as an image.

I have my mms settings on my phone set to go through   http://mms.plspictures.com  per the Ting instructions. Is my issue a Ting issue? A plspictures issue? an Android issue? Or user error?

Thanks!

  • Hey Matt,

It could be a combination of factors causing the MMS issue. I would suggest trying a carrier reset to see if it resets the network connection. if that doesn't work, let me know and we can further troubleshoot. Cheers!

  • Hi Siham,

Thanks for your reply. I actually tried a full carrier reset a couple of weeks ago. Still having the issue. Any other ideas?

Also, I uploaded a screenshot showing what a group message looks like for me. The two other participants are iPhone / iMessage users. Notice it's just a list of blank messages.

    Thanks.

  • Hey Matt, I posted a solution for this on a similar question on the forums. I'll just copy and paste it here for you. Let me know if it works:

I recently came across a similar problem on my Galaxy S3. I would receive regular SMS texts just fine from iphone users. But when it is an MMS or group text, I get blank messages. What I did was install a 3rd party SMS app, like GoSMS Pro, and I was able to view mms messages from iphone users (the old and new messages). If you would like to keep using the stock android messaging app, you can just disable the notifications on GoSMS. You do need to keep the app installed in order, however, to continue to view MMS messages from iphone users. Its an annoying workaround, but it works. The problem seems to be on Apple's side with their iMessage feature automatically enabled on most iPhones when sending texts.

  • Jeffrey,

Thanks for that post. It was a big help. I'm now able to receive iMessage group messages. However, when I reply them the other people are still unable to get my message. I went through the settings on GoSMS and set "group messaging" for iPhone/Android to 'on'. So if you have any ideas about how to send iMessage mesages, or a setting that I should try, it would be appreciated.

But thanks for the temporary solution. Being able to at least _read _iMessage group messages is a huge help.

    Thanks!

  • Matt,

Are you replying via GoSMS or the stock android messaging app? I can reply back fine to iphone group messages using the stock messaging app. Do you get an error message when sending? Maybe try updating your profile/PRL on the phone and double check that all your APN's have http://mms.plspictures.com under the MMSC heading.

  • Jeffrey,

I was trying to reply via the GoSMS app, not the stock app. Your post got me thinking though, even though I'd set up the MMSC properly when I did a carrier reset, I didn't think I'd need to set it in the GoSMS app under the manual APN settings. So I just set it, and now everything is sending and receiving just fine in a group iMessage MMS conversation.

    Thanks for your help!

  • I installed GoSMS Pro, but the messages from iPhone users are still showing up as blank boxes. Any idea what else I can try?

  • A few things to check:

    1. Under GoSMS's settings, go to Advanced-> Send&Receive Settings->MMS Group Chat (all the way at the bottom of the list). Make sure its checked.

    2. Also check your device settings on the Ting dashboard and make sure "Can send and receive picture & video messages" is checked as well.

    3. Check the settings on your stock messaging app and make sure MMS messages are set to auto-retrieve or something similar.
